American and French Revolutions The Age of Revolution is a time period approximately spanning from 1774 to 1848 which resulted in various significant revolutionary movements in different parts of Europe and the Americas. The Age of Revolutions was a period that led to a shift in powers and a change in government. Two of the most significant Revolutions during this time was the American Revolution (1775-1783) and the French Revolution (1789-1799). In the late 18th century both the American and the French Revolution were heavily impacted by Enlightenment ideas of Europe and unfair tax increases; America was a colonial revolution influenced by liberty while France was a home revolution influenced by equality. Though the American and French Revolution were similar in various ways they also had a key differences. For example, during the American Revolution the British 13 original American colonies were fighting for their independence against Great Britain. The French Revolution was a fight between the french citizens and the french monarchy, seeking to overthrow the french king. The American colonies did not want to be associated with British anymore they wanted to break away from their mother country, they wanted to be named their own country. They fought for their independence and release. The french wanted reform and sovereignty from the french monarchy, they wanted a new leader and a new ruler. The French was in Europe fighting for freedom against its own government. Also the types of people who fought in the revolutions differed. In the American colonies there was no set divisions of people and power, all social classes were equally affected by the government. Also the American colonies had an army of trained officials led by George Washington, to fight against the British. The French Revolution was fought by lower and middle class, and peasants. The french did not have much of a trained army its was more of a rebellion of a certain class of people because not all classes of people supported the french revolution. Also the French Revolution consisted of a lot more violence than the American Revolution. During the French Revolution, there was a period known as the “Reign of terror” which was a period of extreme violence and brutality against people who did not support the French Revolution. The purpose was to scare people to support the revolution or they would die. People who supported the French Revolution burned and looted homes and churches and they killed and beheaded thousands of people. Anyone who was seen as a threat to the Revolution lost their life and it did not matter who it
