This rings true with the presidential election of the 1800’s between republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist John Adam’s. Each felt that if the other was elected that the America that they knew would erupt in a civil war. Although they were once allies and collaborated on the establishment of the Declaration of Independence for the new Americas, during this election they couldn’t see eye to eye due to each other’s political views. The federalist favored a centralized system and form of government with urban manufacturing while the democratic- republican wanted to reduce national power and empower the states while supporting an agrarian society. One of the unique things about the elections of that time was that there were no running mates, the man who came in second got to be vice president, which means your vice president was actually the same person who would be fighting against you in the election.
Competition keeps companies striving for the highest quality products for the lowest price because they want to attract customers. However, if people had no choice where to buy their car, it would not matter what a company sold. Additionally, if there was no competition, there would be no way to benchmark your products for quality or technological advancements. Still using the car company example, the car industry would be like it is in Cuba where everyone drives cars from the 70’s, because that is all they
In our world today, education is extremely important in order to be respected by other people and get a job. While material things are important for a person, our society considers education to be even more important. Just like the
Andrew Carnegie starts to make clear that the societies are ultimately paying for the law of competition. He then states that it is not essentially a depraved thing because it has prepared us to progress as a
The competition pressures the workers to work harder and create something new to reach a higher status in life. And these hard works of people, no matter if they are working to reach the high status or for better of society, help the nation as a whole. For example, the companies like Apple, Microsoft, Samsung are all having competition to have higher sale of their products. The workers of the company work hard to create better products then the other companies. Their motives are for the profit issues, but their outcomes from those competition help the nation.
Competition can allow people to set their mind to a certain goal until it is accomplished, then it becomes part of one’s knowledge and then they set their mind to another goal. This cycle may motivate people to improve their performances, seeking to better ourselves. Yet in “Competition and Happiness” Theodore Rubin analyzes the negative effects of competition and how it damages the lives of people into trying to outdo one another. Competitiveness causes more harm than benefit because it bring out the worse in people due to the set list of arbitrary rules of what is right or wrong. I believe we need to learn how to cooperate and accept ourselves because it consumes our motivation to truly ask ourselves what we what.
Obesity has been one of the largest epidemics for years now, but only recently been one of the top three causes of death in the U.S.. The real cause of obesity has also been quite controversial due to the fact that no one can unanimously blame one person; some saying that the consumers are to blame for buying and eating the food, others saying that big companies are to blame for lack of disclosure. big companies deceive consumers, and as a result are solely responsible for obesity. Even though food labels are presented on the back of almost every store bought product, consumers don't always know what they are ingesting, however, this can be prevented with more disclosure. In paragraph ten of “ An Equal Shot: Big Fat America, Michael Maiello states, “By all means put chemicals, hormones,
For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
The Big Picture: Social Class in the U.S. Basically, this video talks about social class. In class systems, people are ranked by both birth and individual achievements. Also, people are born into certain social classes, but are able to move through individual effort in class systems. The divide between the rich and the poor is increasing. I believe that richer people have more opportunities.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. The behavior I decided to break was dipping my fingers in the container caramel was in and then proceeded lick my fingers after doing so. I choose to break this social norm because one, the caramel sauce was really good, and two I was testing to see if my mother would say anything: normally on my birthday she lets me get away with
American society is driven by competition. From the economy to education, our progression as a nation is driven by the competitive mindset of our population. Our lives are shaped by the idea of getting ahead of the person in front of you, being successful, and winning. However, some say that this competition makes us overlook important principles. Our competitive attitudes drive us to be successful, to always do our best, and always strive for excellence.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
America’s identity is defined differently by every individual. Ideally it was to be a place of freedom and acceptance, identified by its message of liberty and hard-work, however the question arises whether America is a melting pot in which only one culture dominates or it a mosaic of many peoples’ histories. America’s potential and true identity lies within its ability to assimilate and create a natural individualism despite race, class, and immigration standing. A country as powerful and influential as America is within industry, politics, and socioeconomics cannot be abstract in definition.
Education is crucial. It develops us as a whole, which leads to discovery, which then, leads to greatness. Education is the catalyst of every country, and we all know that. It’s common sense. Education is the powerhouse for us to keep on moving.
The significance of education cannot be stated enough, which is an investment to a better future. Getting an education is one of the most powerful things a person can ever obtain. It is crucial to the overall development of the individual and the society as a whole. When individuals do not have the option of getting an education due to the cost of the schools as well as the lack of schools itself. For those living in poverty it can be difficult to earn the same amount of education as other people who are considered middle or high class.
