This rings true with the presidential election of the 1800’s between republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist John Adam’s. Each felt that if the other was elected that the America that they knew would erupt in a civil war. Although they were once allies and collaborated on the establishment of the Declaration of Independence for the new Americas, during this election they couldn’t see eye to eye due to each other’s political views. The federalist favored a centralized system and form of government with urban manufacturing while the democratic- republican wanted to reduce national power and empower the states while supporting an agrarian society. One of the unique things about the elections of that time was that there were no running mates, the man who came in second got to be vice president, which means your vice president was actually the same person who would be fighting against you in the election.

For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
The Big Picture: Social Class in the U.S. Basically, this video talks about social class. In class systems, people are ranked by both birth and individual achievements. Also, people are born into certain social classes, but are able to move through individual effort in class systems. The divide between the rich and the poor is increasing. For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. The significance of education cannot be stated enough, which is an investment to a better future. Getting an education is one of the most powerful things a person can ever obtain. It is crucial to the overall development of the individual and the society as a whole. When individuals do not have the option of getting an education due to the cost of the schools as well as the lack of schools itself. For those living in poverty it can be difficult to earn the same amount of education as other people who are considered middle or high class.
America’s identity is defined differently by every individual. Ideally it was to be a place of freedom and acceptance, identified by its message of liberty and hard-work, however the question arises whether America is a melting pot in which only one culture dominates or it a mosaic of many peoples’ histories. America’s potential and true identity lies within its ability to assimilate and create a natural individualism despite race, class, and immigration standing. A country as powerful and influential as America is within industry, politics, and socioeconomics cannot be abstract in definition.
Education is crucial. It develops us as a whole, which leads to discovery, which then, leads to greatness. Education is the catalyst of every country, and we all know that. It’s common sense. Education is the powerhouse for us to keep on moving.
