Obesity has been one of the largest epidemics for years now, but only recently been one of the top three causes of death in the U.S.. The real cause of obesity has also been quite controversial due to the fact that no one can unanimously blame one person; some saying that the consumers are to blame for buying and eating the food, others saying that big companies are to blame for lack of disclosure. big companies deceive consumers, and as a result are solely responsible for obesity.
Even though food labels are presented on the back of almost every store bought product, consumers don't always know what they are ingesting, however, this can be prevented with more disclosure. The immediate effects on the local community consist of less profit in local supermarkets and stores, as well as more conscientious eating habits among consumers. The documentary Fed Up mentions different labels for sugar that Big Companies use to deceive consumers stating, “Sugar can hide behind many names like sucrose, fructose, glucose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, invert sugar and turbinado sugar. And the most well known of all, high-fructose corn syrup”(Soechtig). This is significant on a local scale because if it were not for sly labeling, many consumers would be more aware of their sugar consumption. This is similar to my previous claim because it gives an example of how people are duped into buying seemingly healthy products, all because they are unfamiliar with the more complex synonyms for sugar.
