America is among the most obese countries in the world only surpassed by countries with a small population. This is probably a surprise to no one. However with so much exposure to obesity in America, why hasn’t a drastic change occurred and why do the obesity rates do nothing but increase every year? The reason behind our increased obesity is not because we’re a nation incapable of making our own healthy food choices, it is because we are impetuously handing our money to food corporations who put fattening and not necessarily healthy ingredients in our food without our knowledge. The companies that are a part of the Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition believe that adding labels to genetically modified foods would cause their customers to drift. However, it is only beneficial to Americans that the food industry would open up and label their food correctly, as it would aid them in making more informed food choices. Genetically engineered foods, or foods that contain ingredients wholly or partially synthesized, are not proven to be either safe or unsafe. However, the Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition still has a problem with labeling their foods - why? Their name supposedly says it all, labeling GMO foods is costly. The Just Label It Campaign says otherwise, with the price of GMO food labels being estimated at “a mere $2.30 per person per year”. Multi-billion dollar companies seem to be able to spend large amounts of money campaigning against food labeling, with over $44 million being raised by the Coalition so that they would not have to label their foods. The top donor, Monsanto, has a controversial history. They put a total of $8,112,069 into the Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition, and have also funded research organizations so that the results of research on GMOs is biased in their favor.
