The safety of our food is a NATIONAL concern and should be handled by the Food and Drug Administration, rather than each state creating their own rules. Please approve H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 to ensure the FDA remains in charge of our food labeling and safety. It makes absolutely no sense to give people different information about the same product based on where they live. This will lead to confusing labels and higher prices for food, but it could also risk the safety of people because there would be no consistency in testing the food unless it is done nationally. Most people might ask, "Aren't we doing this already?" The answer to that is yes and no. Most things are handled by the FDA already, but with all sorts of new technology and new information/misinformation about what we eat, we have all kinds of new terms that haven't been put under the FDA's umbrella of responsibilities. …show more content…

This incredibly similar to the situation we had a few years back with the organic foods. Without the term being officially defined and a standard set for what would quality as this kind of food, companies are free to do whatever they want and charge big bucks for something that might be no different from anything else you eat. That's not right and the American people deserve better. When this happened with organic foods, the FDA stepped it, created a process to verify the claim, and awarded honest companies with an FDA certified organic label. All I want is to see the same thing with GMO-related products. Have the FDA define the term and if a company wants to claim their food is GMO-free, they'll have to verify it and get it certified. This doesn't force a company to get certified but if they want that distinction, they will have to earn
