The article, “Stop talking About Teacher Diversity. Start Tackling the problem”, exemplifies exactly what we should do. As a future educator, the solution to the problem of diversifying the teacher work force starts with us, the educators of tomorrow. I agree with this article because a diverse work force allows higher graduation rates among colored children, higher expectations for our students, and more instructional time opposed to harsh discipline for students in minorities. This issue truly does begin with us, and it will continue until the end of time. In order to achieve a diverse work force, we have to tune into our student’s cultures and family values. We need to learn what is important to them and let their views be involved in the classroom. By showing minorities that they are heard, cared for, and important, we are allowing them to reach higher graduation rates, and some of them may attempt to become teachers if we inspire them. The article states, “Another recent study found that African-American students are less likely to receive exclusionary discipline- suspensions, expulsions, or detentions-from black teachers. Meaning that the students receive more instructional time”. Although I am not African- American, nor am I a minority, I believe I can make a difference in this as well. I intend to hold all of my students to identical high expectations to help better themselves and their knowledge. I do not believe children should be suspended or expelled from school no matter what race they are because it takes away from their instruction. We prevent students from bettering themselves by stripping away their right to an education, and this is not reasonable for any of us to take
