Minorities face a myriad of issues when applying for college with several factors putting minorities at a disadvantage. Affirmative Action on the other hand has greatly assisted minorities with getting into some colleges to which they would not have gained acceptance. Affirmative action is the policy of favoring members of a disadvantaged group who have historically suffered from discrimination within a culture. Historically, support for affirmative action has sought to achieve goals such as bridging inequalities and increasing access to education, promoting diversity, and redressing apparent past wrongs or harms. Affirmative Action should therefore continue because it helps in levels the playing and in alleviating the institution of racism. …show more content…

Minorities do not have the same opportunities and advantages that the majority has. Often, institutional racism involves complex and cumulative factors; for example, when many students of color, year after year, do not have access to fully credentialed teachers, high-quality curriculum materials and advanced courses. While schools were desegregated in 1954, education in many ways, has become increasingly segregated and unequal. The reality is that throughout the country there are those students, many of whom are white, who get up every morning, eat a healthy breakfast, have a laptop, a cell phone, and personal tutors. They attend schools that are equipped with the best technology available and well paid teachers. On the other side are students, most of whom are black and brown, who rely on the free lunch at school as their only meal for the day, walk to school fearing they may be shot, have no computers, and attend a school with outdated textbooks, run down buildings , and under paid
