Amidst the Red Scare at a high school graduation ceremony, William Faulkner conveys his reasoning to high schoolers that in order to change the world they have to overcome fear. Faulkner emphasizes his purpose by using repetition and word choice. In an overall encouraging speech, the speaker displays his purpose using repeated phrases. For instance, he said, “..when you have got old..you are tired..you don't care,..you want to be left alone.” In this part of the passage the author is saying to his audience that they must use the youth to their advantage because there will come a time when they're not young anymore, He also goes on to say to the youth to “never be afraid” multiple times.
