In the past years, parents used to expect a lot from their children, like earning a lot of money and doing a job that they recommend or expect from you. Women did not have the right to choose their husbands. The youth did not have the right to pursue a career they like, parents chose their career and their life. Youth today do have the choice to choose their career. But sometimes, their parents choose what’s best for them. Sometimes they might not be wrong, but sometimes they may also be wrong. Baba wanted Amir to do a highly valued job and earn respect but Amir loved to write as his character was portrayed from the beginning of the book and he wanted to become a writer. Baba wanted Amir to become strong and bold as Baba. The quote “Children aren’t coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors”(Hosseini, 21) talks about parental pressure. When Amir kite runs with Hassan and wins a kite home, he sees Baba talking to Rahim Khan. Immediately Amir goes to his room. Baba and Rahin khan were talking about Amir. The above quote was said by Rahim Khan. In the quote coloring books refers to the career of their kids and colors refer to their decisions. The meaning of that quote is that parents cannot choose the career of their kids. Kids should have the freedom to make their own decisions. A quote stating Baba did not like writers is “Real men didn’t read poetry…”(Hosseini, 21). When Amir tells Baba he wants to become a writer, Baba furiously says the above quote. Unlike Amir, I am not scared of my family. I think like my father and I behave like my mom. Unlike my old man, I am not a public speaker. Unlike my brother, I don’t have straight hair. Unlike Amir, I will not run away from incidents. I am a tremendous listener like my mom. Unlike Amir, I would not want anyone to ignore me and not sense my presence. I want myself to be felt in the atmosphere I am in. Unlike Amir, my wishes need to be accepted, and I have to possess the right to my life. I feel respected and heard when my wishes are accepted. I feel proud of myself after being heard. I would also feel free and even braver to talk to my family if my wishes are accepted. Baba is a very strict and organized man and wants Amir to do a high-class job that baba likes. Unlike Baba, my parents do not expect me to have a high-class job. Amir had to be in the trauma of impressing Baba by doing something ‘high-class’, my parents do not expect me to do this ‘stuff’. They expect me to have top grades in school so I can land in the best college and lead a superior life.
