Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Human rights is a topic all people should care about. All people deserve the right to meet basic human needs. So where can we find information on basic human rights? Amnesty International, a non-profit organization that strives to fight for human rights by spreading information and fighting for what’s right, explains, defines, and offers ways to support many human rights issues on its website. Amnesty has a page called “What We Do”. This page has a variety of different human rights topics that define the issue and how Amnesty goes about supporting it. Personally, I found much interest in the section “Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights”. Amnesty uses empathy to try to get the reader to understand why these rights are important. They use words like “Our children need education” and “When we get sick, we need healthcare.” to establish a feeling of connection with the rights. This choice in their writing shows they care enough to create a lasting impression in the reader that will get them interested in the human rights and issues going on later in the webpage. Amnesty goes on to define the human rights listed above in separate sections. What I find to be very important about these sections is that there is more than a simple “we need __ to survive”, in fact, these sections go into detail about logistics and why these rights are not being met. For example, in the food section, there is information about how the right to food isn’t simply a starvation problem, it’s an accessibility and sustainability issue.
