Amy Chu The Success Of Chinese Mothers

343 Words2 Pages
After reading this essay by Amy Chua, I can’t say I was persuaded to believe that Chinese mothers are superior. I am not debating the success of their children, however, as a Western American mother, I feel that we measure our kids’ success in other ways then just academics. Chua mostly backed up her beliefs by her own personal experience and the results of one case study.
The study reported that “70% of Western mothers said that stressing academic success is not good for the children or that parents need to foster the idea that learning is fun.” By contrast, 0% of Chinese mothers felt the same. Instead, Chinese mothers said “they believe their children can be the best students and that academic achievement reflects successful parenting.”
