The video “Ride the Tiger: A guide through the Bipolar Brain” introduced and explored new insights in brain science that are being used to create new and more effective treatments for Bipolar and depression. It is important to understand about how the biological components of these disorders affect our patents and how effective medication can be. I can use this information to guide clinical decisions when working with clients who suffer from Bipolar or Depression. Initially, this video gave me a greater understanding about how much biology affects these disorders and the importance of incorporating referrals to a psychiatrist is in our work. Using medication to address these disorders can be a life and death issue because of the prevalence of suicide risk associated with them.
The book “Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain” by David Eagleman is a summary of how David Eagleman, a neuroscientist, thinks is the best way to reform the criminal justice system in the United States. Eagleman argues that sentencing for crimes should not be based on the crime itself but rather the person who is committing it ability to reform. Throughout the book Eagleman gives examples and explains how a person who consciously commits a crime is not completely at fault since there many factors that influence a person’s conscience mind. He cites the examples of stress and drugs as two factors that could alter a person’s personality and contribute in making a person commit a crime.
Seen in the eyes of many as a joke or more than often confused with fear due to it’s many similar characteristics. In his article called, “ Searching the Brain for the Roots of Fear”, published in January 2012 on The New York Times, Joseph LeDoux, gives his opinion about anxiety to those who don’t know anything about it. He proves that anxiety occurs when we over anticipate things, causing fear within ourselves. Throughout his article he provides multiple scenarios and situations showing his audience how anxiety works, and how it differentiates from fear. Fear is a feeling we all have felt at one moment in our lives.

Summary: Chapter 2 Chapter two dives into the concept of learning. As mentioned in the previous chapter, learning is the study of changes in behavior produced by experience, so when studying learning it is vital to examine how events in the environment change an individual’s behavior. Many scientists consider learning to be a natural phenomenon, they make their case based on four assumptions. The first assumption being that natural phenomena’s do not just happen, but instead they are caused as the result of some other event. The second assumption is that causes precede effects.

Italian culture is one of history, family, and religion. Italian immigrants experienced hardships all the way from the poverty in Italy to the less than welcoming established people and Catholic Church of the United States. This is illustrated in the book The Madonna of 115th Street: Faith and Community in Italian Harlem, 1880-1950 by Robert A. Orsi, referenced throughout this paper. The celebration and historical tradition of the Madonna of 115th Street reflects the Italians culture and story. As immigrants they struggled to be fully accepted into the Catholic Church.
Positive emotions like happiness, contentment, and joy help us develop stability and optimism, deepen social connections, and encourage a sense of purpose and meaning in life. They can give us the motivation and energy to achieve our goals, pursue our passions, and help us navigate difficult situations more quickly and confidently. Negative emotions like anger, sadness, and fear are vital. They can help us identify areas of our lives that need attention or change and motivate us to take action. Studies have shown that individuals who can acknowledge and process negative emotions in healthy and constructive ways experience greater psychological well-being and resilience.
Forebrain #3 The section I chose is the forebrain which controls the higher functions of the brain, such as thinking, decision making, and dreaming. I chose forebrain #3 which consists of the occipital lobes, parietal lobes, and the somatosensory cortex. The occipital lobes is the visual processing center of the brain containing most of the region of the visual cortex. The occipital lobes are involved in many functions including visual perception, color recognition, reading, comprehension, depth perception, and recognition of object movement.

Astrocytes are largely sex differentiated in size, and which hemisphere of the brain they are located in seems to have an influence on the complexity of the astrocyte. Mild Alzheimer’s is the beginning stage of the disease and usually lasts about two to four years. If a person demonstrates some symptoms of Alzheimer’s, they do not necessarily have the disease because several medical conditions share the same symptoms. The next stage is moderate Alzheimer’s, which lasts about two to ten years. Symptoms of moderate Alzheimer’s include not being able to recognize people, confused speech, wandering, trouble sleeping, time and place confusion, and delusions.

As all human beings can express how they feel through facial expressions, this suggests that emotions are biological rather than cognitive.
