The Amygdala The Amygdala is a small, almond shaped cluster of nuclei residing in the temporal lobes of the brain. It is part of the limbic system, which is a cluster of brain structures above the brainstem. There are two amygdala, the right and the left one. Functionally, the two look different, but physically they are similar in structure. The right amygdala is associated with negative emotions such as fear and sadness, and more primal survival instincts. On top of this, the right also plays a role in the expression and processing of fear inducing stimulus, as well as playing a role in storing declarative and episodic memory. The left processes the same emotions as the right, but also is able to process happiness, while the right cannot.
