In Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima, the major conflict that Antonio has with the two different paths both sides of his family provide for him make an appearance in his dreams to aid him in determining his destiny and what choices he will make that will influence his future.
In one of the first dreams we see from Antonio concerning Lupito’s death, we see him struggling with what his mother wants of him versus what his father does. “we must gather around our father, I heard myself say. His dream is to ride westward in search of new adventure. He builds highways that stretch into the sun, and we must travel that road with him.” (26). Antonio is tempted to travel west with his father while at the same time, he feels an obligation to stay home and become a priest like a good Luna. which “side” he end up choosing: either Luna or Marez, is pivotal in what Antonio’s life will be like moving forward. There are many aspects of Antonio’s life that either pull him towards his mother’s side and the Lunas, but others that lean Antonio towards his father’s side, the Marez’s. Antonio’s mother’s path shows a life where Antonio becomes a priest like a Luna would, while if Antonio chooses the life of a Marez, he will be an adventurer and travel around the world, never tied down to one set place. At first, Antonio finds himself tempted by his father’s dream, which is to leave the city and go west where he can be a free man. Add explanation of side. This side is tempting to Antonio because it speaks of a new adventure that is hard to turn down. However, not long after Antonio declares his desire to follow his father’s dream, Antonio’s brothers, whom he greatly respects and admires, pitch a thought of their own. After Antonio expresses his support for his father, his brother quickly reply with, “You are but a baby, Tony, you are our mother’s dream. Stay and sleep to the doves cou-rou while we cross the mighty river of the carp to build our father’s castle in the hill.” (26). Antonio’s brothers are encouraging him to stay home and make their mother’s dream a reality. They are telling him that while they go off to follow in their father’s footsteps, he should stay home and fulfill his mother’s wishes. Antonio also is still very young and what his brothers are suggesting is that he is too young to go on any kind of adventure ad what his father is proposing. More importantly, if Antonio follows his father, there would be no one left to make his mother’s dream a reality
