After Jacob asks Laban to leave and he refuses saying God has given Jacob to him in Genesis 30, the story continues with the idea of Jacob’s family secretly fleeing from Laban. Jacob gets fed up with feeling used and mistreated by Laban and decides to leave. When Jacob and his family flees, Laban hunts him down and confronts Jacob. Genesis 31 describes Jacob and his family leaving as well as the confrontation between Jacob and Laban leading to a covenant.
In the beginning of Genesis 31, the reader learns that Laban’s sons do not like Jacob and from this, Jacob realizes that Laban is not in favor of him. The Laban’s sons say, ‘“Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has gained great wealth”’ (Gen 31:1).
