What drives a hero? Why do all of the spidermans and supermans do what they do? This is a result of Joseph Campbell’s “Call to Adventure.” In both the epic “Beowulf” translated by Burton Raffel and the stories told by Campbell, examples of how the heroes are called to adventure are exhibited. Though the call to adventure in “Beowulf” is a result of an external force, which is created from the monster Grendel spreading terror, and the call to adventure in Campbell’s story is an internal force, “Beowulf” exemplifies Joseph Campbell’s claims regarding a hero’s “call to adventure.” One way that “Beowulf” exemplifies Campbell’s claim of a hero’s “call to adventure” is that there is an unnatural force that initially causes the hero to begin his
