Lilly Tran Mr. Sandefur Honors English 10A - 5 20 January 2023 The Hero’s Journey The hero's journey described by author Joseph Campell in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces talks about the archetypal path that many heroes in myths take to become one. From the departure, the initiation, and the return home, many familiar stories follow the hero's journey. One such story is from the movie The Clash of the Titans which follows the journey of Perseus as he searches for a way to defeat the fearsome Kraken that threatens to destroy humanity.
The myth is the story of Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae. As a baby he and his mother were forced into a coffin by his grandfather, Acrisius, and were sent out into sea to perish. They didn 't drown, however, they floated to land until they were found by a king, Polydectes. The king fell in love with Perseus ' mother and wanted to wed her, her refused so she could spend time caring for her son. After Perseus had grown into a young man Polydectes sent him on a mission to kill Medusa in a hope it would bring Perseus ' death, the king thought that with her son gone the woman she loved would marry him.

Heroes usually have super powers and are constantly saving people. But it takes much more traits than this to be classified as an epic hero. Some characteristics of an epic hero are supernatural help, leaving on a journey in which proves himself, and they are sometimes honored after death. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows many traits of an epic hero.
Odysseus the Hero According to mythologist and professor Joseph Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Hero Quotes-Brainy Quotes).This applies to Odysseus because he risks his life to keep his family and soldiers safe. For Odysseus, being a hero is not by his effort, but by his wisdom bravery. When Odysseus stands up to a Cyclops, he exhibits bravery, and he also is a good leader in this position because of his ability to inspire his soldiers. By doing this he demonstrates heroic behavior when he acts courageous and uses his wits.
People might describe a hero as someone with bravery and courage. Some might say a hero might be a strong soldier and leader. Others may define a hero as someone who uses his mind as much as strength to win. Odysseus is portrayed as a hero because he shows many heroic traits. Odysseus shows a lot of courage, which is what lots of other “heroes” have.
The hero has extraordinary strength, being the strongest man on earth he is sometimes he is unaware of the power he posses, Hercules is invulnerable. Based on the graphic Novel Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi. This movie begins in 20th Century Iran, 1980s - 1990s. Young Marjane is witness to events from her early years of life till her young adult life. The story starts when Marjane is 10 years old and the new regime in Iran had set new laws, outlawing anything and everything with western influence and made veils mandatory for females. Marjane tells her teacher she wants to become a profit which has her sceptical about her life at home, so she calls in Marjane’s parents.
Just like Hercules, he is a son of Zeus, but his mother is a princess names Danae. Perseus is actually known for many things but the most common battle he won is against Medusa. Medusa was a woman who has snakes for hair, she was cursed by the Goddess Athena. Perseus, wearing a helmet of invisibility, snuck into Medusa’s lair and slays her while she was asleep. Anyone who lay eyes on Medusa, would be turned into a stone.
All throughout history, occurrences of oppression and invasion have happened all around the world. The rights and freedom of innocent lives have been taken. The people with power have abused it and become tyrannical and self-centered. The innocent begin to rise against the malicious leaders trying to control their lives. Even through times of downfall and nonsuccess, humanity continues to fight back.

Cultures can also demonstrate deviations about everything such as social classes, religion, and education. In several different societies, they tend to reveal different beliefs to the world. From the lovers point of view, all it is, is seamless love, but the government sees disrespect among the social class system. This is one of the many ways Marjane Satrapi demonstrates a perspective in not only social class, nationalism, but in the loss of innocence as well Iranian war in the 1980s. For instance, Marjane 's perspective changes from when she was a naive respectful little girl at the beginning of the novel, to an unruly, rebellious young adult towards the end. For example, this young boy is drinking alcohol, you aren’t even allowed to drink alcohol until you are 21 years of age.
To what extent is the literary devices shown in Persepolis increase the impact of the novel and show the culture of Iran in the 1970s? In the novel Persepolis by Majane Satrapi, she tells the story of her life living in Iran in the 1970s. In this novel she discusses the atrocities committed by both sides of the bloody Iranian revolution and how both sides truly were. In the novel, Satrapi uses several literary devices to enhance the meaning of the novel to a much greater degree than directly telling the reader. Still, these literary devices also allow the reader to peer into the very culture of Iran in the novel and how certain objects can mean certain things both from within the culture and the context of the novel.
The historical synopsis of Persepolis is her depiction of Iranians and of the battles they encountered, and are still experiencing, in post-revolutionary Iran. Persepolis makes essential pace toward transforming how Western audience discern Iranians. Persepolis gives it readers a glance at how life is like in Iran. However, people base their impression of different countries on what the the media reports. Sadly, the notion of Iranians is usually adverse and associated with fundamentalism, terrorism, and fanaticism.
