Set in the future where an insectoid alien species, the Formics (or the buggers), have attacked Earth twice with devastating results for the human species, Andrew “Ender” Wiggins is humanity's last hope. A child prodigy and main character of Ender’s Game, Ender is sent to Battle School to learn how to fight and destroy the buggers. He is chosen because his characteristics are perfect to be a commander. Some traits that are very important in making Ender who he is are his calculating judgments, creativity, and compassion.

In Helena Maria Viramontes’ novel, Under the Feet of Jesus, Estrella starts off as angsty and confused, but then shifts to a state of contentment and understanding, caused by life experiences. These character traits are revealed through the selection of detail, figurative language, and tone. Initially, Estrella is immediately characterized as “very angry” when she finds Perfecto’s “foreign” toolbox. She uses a tone of confusion that illustrates her unfamiliarity with the objects in the tool box by using words such as “funny-shaped”, and using a simile comparing her confusion with the tools to the alphabet which Estrella “could not decipher”.
Someone doesn’t have to be a doctor or a psychologist to understand this depressing story that turns out to be an analytical case study. Paul’s thoughts, emotions, and actions are followed closely in a form that reveals a lot about his character. Paul appears to be a typical, troubled adolescent. However, his character has deeper demons that haunt him throughout the story. His is preoccupied with art, beauty, success, love, and himself.
As the first two verses represent the voice of the narrator, in the following lines the narrator’s voice shifts into an implied other person who sings “Bury my heart / Cover it with the coldest stones / So it will suffer longer / Like I did in your arms”. These lines can be interpreted as the narrator’s memories of the woman, but also insinuates his feelings of guilt and sorrow that these memories evoke. In the following lines the focus returns to the narrator as he continues “You led me into the darkest night”.
