The book starts with a delinquent named Cole who likes to get into trouble with things like robberies, bullying and possibly drugs and alcohol. The first bit of the book starts off with Cole bragging about robbing a store and then a boy named Peter Driscal tattles on him and Cole gives him a mean glare and says, “ You’re dead!”. Later that day Cole finds Peter and brutally beats him while others watch and try to stop Cole. As part of his punishment he is told he has two options; number one being jail and number two being circle justice and a banishment to an island off the coast of Alaska. Cole choses the island and two men named Garvey and Edwin.

The finding was made in response to complaints from the Grierson house's neighbors regarding an unpleasant stink emanating from it. The body of Miss Emily Grierson was found in a walnut bed inside her house, her head found underneath a moldy, yellow cushion that showed no sign of sunlight. Homer’s body was discovered after the two female cousins of Miss Emily were in the process of searching the house, they came across a room filled with mystery and they discovered the withering remains of Homer Barron, which seemed to have been kept throughout time. Since Miss Emily was long believed to be a recluse, many details of her life are unknown, especially those pertaining to her connection with Homer Barron and the events surrounding their deaths.
Emily’s Mental Deterioration After getting over the initial shock of finding out that the mysterious woman that everyone was talking about was going to sleep each night with a decaying body next to her, it makes sense for the reader to question her mental state. If the reader took a closer look at the town’s description of her, they will realize that as time went on, Emily’s will power began to deteriorate. When she was young, she was the topic of everybody’s conversation, however, she did not let that bother her and walked down the streets with her head held high. Emily took over the old house after her father’s death and kept a few servants around to keep the house tidy, nonetheless, the outside of the house was not kept in the best of conditions.

Emily is like any woman or girl who feel insecure or not sure how she feels and is just confused on how to handle things going on in her life. Emily didn’t live the life like any other woman in her town. Being in the situation she was in was, what choices would you make? There are some things we can’t explain like why Emily kill Homer Barron and why she kept her father's corpse before letting anyone know that he was dead.
The previous lavishness of the “big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies…set on what had once been [the] most select street” (437) indicates that Emily came from a well-off family that was probably highly respected. The whiteness of the house can be taken to symbolize the innocence of her youth, and that as she got older her macabre habits manifested themselves and polluted that innocence, leaving the house dingy and tainted. The condition of the house when Emily dies is that of a worn down vestige to the past, “an eyesore among eyesores” (437), representing how the towns people saw her. She was a curiosity, a clandestine entity that could only be unraveled after her death when there was no one left to safe guard the dark secrets of her house. The house stands as a monument to a lost time and a testament to tradition that has no place in the modern era, much like Emily

When her father died we can see that she is controlling of him and would not release the body for burial. After she loses her father, it is as if she loses her sense of reality. It is as if maybe the old white house is beginning to represent the attitude and ways of Emily. The house is old, dark, and very dusty just as the townspeople think Emily is. Homer Barron is a construction worker from New York.
Emily kept her house the same way it had always been and was letting it decay while she stayed in it. She refused to clean or change the house at all to preserve it in the Old South. She did not want to accept the death of other people. When Emily’s father died, she refused the town from taking his body and burying it. She wanted to keep her father’s body with her and the town was “about to use law and force, but she broke down, and they buried her father quickly” (453).
In Katherine Mansfield’s “The Doll’s House” there is a much bigger story then what is being told. There is a lesson that can be learned by reading this story. Being prejudice isn’t always about people who are different colors or of different races, it can also be about people who are rich and people who are poor. People who have more money can be negative towards people who are not as well off, and people who have finer things and more money can have a negative personality, also Kezia appears to be a young girl with a still pure soul.
