The book starts with a delinquent named Cole who likes to get into trouble with things like robberies, bullying and possibly drugs and alcohol. The first bit of the book starts off with Cole bragging about robbing a store and then a boy named Peter Driscal tattles on him and Cole gives him a mean glare and says, “ You’re dead!”. Later that day Cole finds Peter and brutally beats him while others watch and try to stop Cole. As part of his punishment he is told he has two options; number one being jail and number two being circle justice and a banishment to an island off the coast of Alaska. Cole choses the island and two men named Garvey and Edwin. Garvey is part of juvenile justice and wants to help Cole because Garvey himself has had run ins …show more content…
Edwin is from Drake Alaska a town in which he was banned from and to the same island he was banned to that Cole has to face and that 's his reason to want to help Cole. The two men escort Cole there on the boat. Garvey and Edwin show Cole around and show him his cabin. They explain he will have to stay there a year and he has supplies and homework to do while he is staying there. Edwin warns him about the devils club, a prickly plant that will make your hand numb and Garvey hands Cole the At.oow blanket which was passed on to Garvey from many generations and now on to Cole for him to pass on in time.Cole sees his chance of escape as Edwin and Garvey leave but before that he sets fire to the cabin. He takes off to the beach and starts to swim but gets cold and goes back. The At.oww is there and not burnt, he also finds his knife. Cole also saw the spirit bear and the bear shows up again in time for Cole to have made a spear and Cole goes after the bear. He attacks the bear while in return the bear cripples Cole and leaves. For quite a bit of the book Cole just sits in silence thinking about stuff all the while he has an epiphany thanks to the baby
