Lastly, the two words the son and the man add to the complexity of the relationship. We can see through the father's actions that he is worried he might not make it for dinner as he rubs the steering wheel and stares at the barricade momentarily. One important question is brought up in the story and that is what a good man is defined as and how there is so few of them left in the world. Many of the characters in this story think of themselves to be kind-hearted people based on morals that they lived and stood by. These morals are strongly flawed which leaves each character blinded by their own self-righteousness. The grandmother plays a significant role in the book, exposing the real theme.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy demonstrates to readers the same general perception, and displays just how much an inadequacy of morality can transform a person, or a world, for the worse. Like Sereny, the audience of The Road experiences the changes of people who have no morality, and one cannot help but question the beliefs previously strongly accepted before taking a gander at its pages. For example, we see early on in The Road, the resilience of trust in other humans, and rightfully so. People in this book have proved over, and over again, to be nothing but concern for the boy and his father. They encounter a shady old man who, despite being friendly to, lies about being much older than he actually is.

During the son’s pivotal moment where he starts to enjoy his time he see’s his father in a different light than what he used to the son realizes how much fun he has had with his father during the trip and on all the past trips they have been on. The changing relationship between the father and son is demonstrated, when the son thinks back to what happened on the car ride back.

In the harsh world of The Road, there is a man and boy who both struggle to survive and their only hope is to cling on to the good morals. People have abandon all the good morals and have resorted to violence, murder, and cannibalism to survive.
In the film, The Road, a father (played by Viggo Mortenson) guides a son (Kodi Smit-Mcphee) in a post-apocalyptic landscape practically devoid of life and humanity. In the end, the father dies, having taken the son as far as he could and shaped him the best he could to both survive in that world, but also retain a sense of humanity--to be one of the good guys who are: "carrying the fire," as they state several times throughout the film. Right after that very emotional scene, the boy encounters a family: a man, a woman and a dog, who offers to take him in, where the incredibly bleak film ends on a somewhat more hopeful but wary note. The way it's portrayed, they make it somewhat ambiguous whether he can trust the family or not.
