The most relatable archetype in “The Street” is The Road of Trials, which relates most to the short story, because Richard Wright goes through and has to overcome many obstacles in his life. During the short story, Richard’s dad does not return to his family at home, leaving them hungry and hopeless. As a result, the young boy, Richard, is forced to learn how to be independent, gaining the responsibilities of the man of the house. One day, his mother gives him the responsibility to go get groceries; she writes a note, shows him his way, and sends him off. While Richard is on his way to the store, he stumbles upon a group of goons who jump him, taking everything he has, including his spirit.
We can see through the father's actions that he is worried he might not make it for dinner as he rubs the steering wheel and stares at the barricade momentarily. When you think of family you might think of adults and their children, or kids who lost their parents but are still related to each other. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton tells otherwise. It shows that even if you are not related, you can still be family; you can still have love and affection for each other. There is connection shown between the greasers from the Socs in the blue Mustang to Johnny dying in the hospital not wanting to see his mother.

When he first encounters the mother and her son in the parking lot, he immediately senses that something is wrong and approaches them. Despite not knowing them, he offers to help, asking if their car had broken down. When they reveal that they have been waiting for two days to cross the border, Mel offers to lend them his car. He even goes further to say that he would talk to the authorities on their behalf, showing his willingness to go the extra mile to help them. This attribute of Mel’s character is crucial because it helps the reader understand that Mel is a compassionate person who is willing to help strangers.
The example of wanting to be hit by a car led to a driver who was a neighbor. Sedaris describes the event, “He had outfitted his tires with chains and stopped a few feet from our sister’s body,” (Sedaris 90). The sister explained to the driver that they were locked out of the house. This is an exceptional emotional appeal to convey to his audience that the event was traumatic to the children.
Some live with the idea that family will always understand you and be there with you. Although many people believe this to be true, in some cases it is not. Just like Alice Walker from the excerpt “Father” and Amir from “The Kite Runner”, where unfortunately their own fathers were not as understanding as they would like them to be. The point of the movie is to convey the importance of family, friends, and loyalty in life. These values have a great deal of meaning to us. After all, no one would dispute that these things are important, even though “family” means different things to different people. In the United States, a “family” once meant a married man and woman who had never been married to anyone else before and their pure biological children.
