The most relatable archetype in “The Street” is The Road of Trials, which relates most to the short story, because Richard Wright goes through and has to overcome many obstacles in his life. During the short story, Richard’s dad does not return to his family at home, leaving them hungry and hopeless. As a result, the young boy, Richard, is forced to learn how to be independent, gaining the responsibilities of the man of the house. One day, his mother gives him the responsibility to go get groceries; she writes a note, shows him his way, and sends him off. While Richard is on his way to the store, he stumbles upon a group of goons who jump him, taking everything he has, including his spirit.
We can see through the father's actions that he is worried he might not make it for dinner as he rubs the steering wheel and stares at the barricade momentarily. At night when the barricade has no guards around, they try and drive through the snow-ridden road. He tells his son not to do the actions he is doing and puts a sense of matter on what he is saying. When he first encounters the mother and her son in the parking lot, he immediately senses that something is wrong and approaches them. Despite not knowing them, he offers to help, asking if their car had broken down. When they reveal that they have been waiting for two days to cross the border, Mel offers to lend them his car. He even goes further to say that he would talk to the authorities on their behalf, showing his willingness to go the extra mile to help them. In the excerpt “Father” it explains Walker’s relationship with her father and how she regrets not having a stronger connection with him. It also makes you question why different elements of the story are so important. When the visitor views the garage and the swing set, the mother and father in the house are suspicious of him. “He could be anyone, after all. Any kind of thief, or mentally disturbed person, or even a murderer…” This quote shows that the parents were distrustful of the man.

When you think of family you might think of adults and their children, or kids who lost their parents but are still related to each other. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton tells otherwise. It shows that even if you are not related, you can still be family; you can still have love and affection for each other. In the book, there is a contradiction between the gang’s biological family and their “family”. There is connection shown between the greasers from the Socs in the blue Mustang to Johnny dying in the hospital not wanting to see his mother.
You will cross the paths with them eventually. You will miss them and try to get back in their lives, but it will be too late. Even if you leave a newborn baby and never come back, you will never be able to get rid of the horrible blame that will follow you for the rest of your life. The film shows us how much the children’s lives have changed after their father left them.
The example of wanting to be hit by a car led to a driver who was a neighbor. Sedaris describes the event, “He had outfitted his tires with chains and stopped a few feet from our sister’s body,” (Sedaris 90). The sister explained to the driver that they were locked out of the house. This is an exceptional emotional appeal to convey to his audience that the event was traumatic to the children.
