Although Abraham Lincoln decided to end slavery manny thought the sudden end to slavery would destroy the economy. Before 1830 having or owning a slave was not unusual even Thomas Jefferson owned an African American slave. But after some time people started to realize that what they were doing was wrong, many influence came from books, leaders, and African American slaves. A novel was a huge hit back in 1852 when it was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin dedicated to one of her children after they passed away. It was about the pain the slaves had to deal with when families were separated and sold of to different people.
During this time America was split between the Northern and the Southern, people in the northern believed that it was not okay to own another human and work them however they pleased. But in the South they were a very reliant on agriculture and the workforce of slaves. They said slavery was a social norm according to the bible in Genesis 17:13,”Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.” This passage talked about slavery very briefly but to many it was held true saying God never called Abraham out for owning a slave. Another argument was that if African Americans were to be freed they would destroy the American way of life by stealing, raping, and being violent. One of the biggest arguments the Southern used against this feud was taking all of the Caucasian men and women out of jobs. Southerners believed that if slavery were to be abolished there wouldn’t be enough jobs to go around leaving Caucasian homeless. They said slaves would work for a lower rate and work twice as
