Louie Zamperinis story is one of perseverance, strength, and courage. The central idea of this book is to never give up and keep on going, even in the darkest situations. This novel explores many issues and ideas, but the one that stands out the most is the personal one. Laura Hillenbrand uses the themes of suffering and perseverance in the novel Unbroken to show how if a person believes he/she can do it, it can be done. The author demonstrates this in many ways telling the story of his childhood until adulthood.
Over the years, opinions on God have changed. Some people believed that God is terrifying and vengeful while others disagreed saying that He is loving and accepting of all. Jonathan Edwards was a Calvinist, who argued that unless one never sins, he or she is most likely doomed to hell. Edwards believed that humans are powerless in comparison to the power of God. In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, the author achieves his purpose of arguing that in order to be saved from an afterlife in hell, one must ask for forgiveness and accept Christ, through the uses of intense imagery, a terrifying tone, and understandable metaphors.
In his 1940 apologetic, The Problem of Pain, Lewis reasons that suffering and pain in the Christian life has a desired effect. Affirming that God’s instrument of pain “gives the only opportunity the bad man can have for amendment.” Of course, Lewis readily admits that his reasoning is not the work of a real theologian, but rather as “a layman and an amateur.”

Sometimes all a human being looks for in this miserable world is purpose. I can only imagine the pain a parent can experience over the loss of a child. In the novel "Where it Hurts" by Reed Farrel Coleman, we come to realize what pain can do to a simple man. As a police officer Gus's role is to protect but when he loses his son, his life begins to fall apart. Even though John jr's death wasn't a cruel murder, Gus takes it as if life had murdered his son.
Emmanuel Levinas was a Jewish philosopher born in Lithuania in 1906. In 1931, he moved to and lived in France for the rest of his life. He was enlisted in the war against Germany, was captured, and became a prisoner of war. At the same time, most of his family who still resided in Eastern Europe were killed in the Holocaust. In his works, Levinas attempts to disprove theodicies (371).
There is suffering in the world, because life is unfair and always has been. Good people are harmed by evil people, who do not care about the wellbeing of others. Life for some people is about honoring family and tradition for others it is about gaining power over others. Death is a natural occurrence and some people are able to accept this, some cannot accept the fact that life is not eternal and seek ways to artificially elongate their lives even if it means harming or killing others in the process. All people are different and while some are righteous and will stand by their beliefs even if it means death they will, others are cowards driven by greed and power and will destroy anything and everything for it.
The Problem and Purpose of Pain Identifying the problem with pain is fairly simple according to Lewis, explaining the purpose of pain not so much. In chapter one Lewis tells us that the problem with pain is the fact that we as Christians have to try to make it fit into our belief system and that fact “creates, rather than solves, the problem of pain.” (C. Lewis) It also means that as Christians, we are left facing the dilemma of trying to explain how we serve an all-loving, all- powerful, benevolent God who despite His benevolence allows us to suffer. How can I do this?
Formal text 1.5 Looking For Alaska In Looking For Alaska, an off-kilter love story written by John Green, a character who negatively influences other characters is Alaska Young. Alaska has a negative influence on Miles Halter (Pudge) and Chip Martin (The Colonel) throughout her life at Culver Creek, her death and even when she is no longer there with Miles and Colonel. Alaska put them into the same ”labyrinth of suffering” that she tried desperately to escape. Alaska Young had a negative influence on Miles Halter, also known as Pudge. From the day Miles moved to Culver Creek Alaska clearly had an influence over him.
“The Problem of Evil” is simply the question, why does God allow evil to happen? God is omnipotent, omniscient, all-loving, and rational, therefore why does evil exist? There is either no God or he is not what we think he is, since evil could be prevented by him with no risk. Atheists and anti-theodicist see a problem with the idea that God could prevent evil. They believe that because God is so powerful and perfect, that he would not allow such immoral actions to be done.
A lot of arguments have been known to prove or disprove the existence of God, and the Problem of Evil is one of them. The Problem of Evil argues that it is impossible to have God and evil existing in the same world. Due to ideal characteristics of God, evil should not have a chance to exist and make human suffer. In this essay, I will examine the argument for the Problem of Evil, a possible theodicy against the argument, and reply to the theodicy. First of all, to be clear, the Problem of Evil is an argument that shows that God cannot be either all- powerful, all-knowing, and/or all good.
Throughout Harper’s book and Kheiyn’s article, I found five main points that stood out to me in relating to helping me understand why bad things happen to good people. First, God did not create pain and suffering, man has through sin and defiance. Second, although suffering is not good, God uses it to achieve good. The third point tells us that the day will come where your misery will no longer exist and God will judge evil. The fourth states that our suffering does not even compare to what God has in store for his followers.
#51 Sorrow He doesn’t talk too much as he used to before; he doesn’t care anymore about his hair, falling onto the face, − it protects him, more or less, when he no longer can pull a lenient smile onto his lips. Though, he was kinda alright at the court, without even knowing that he would be acquitted; he even made a thanksgiving speech at the following party in the small pub, where they decided to celebrate the happy outcome. There were some guys form the police department as well; he still owes them money for the game of mus. Leon comes closer and squeezes Luis’ shoulders, forcing them to square, and then, barely touching, he puts a wavy lock behind Luis’ ear.
