They are two different symbols, yet they both describe something as looking nice. Another example of interactionism is how men and women sleep at night. In Pleasantville, there are only separate beds for a married couple. They both have a single twin sized bed of which they sleep at night, and when they become intimate they move the beds together to make one big one. The beds symbolize how men and women respect each other, and give each other their space.

Each side makes many valuable points that delve in deeper to further expand on their opinions. The pro-choice group is arguing that women should have an option available to terminate her pregnancy if she wants to or not as long as she has good reasons for it. The list of reasons goes on and on showing facts, feelings, thoughts, concerns, and doubts that women are going through. While at the same time the pro-life group challenges them also by providing facts, thoughts, feelings, concerns, emotions, and beliefs.
In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
In the movie, Stand By Me, by Stephen King, four boys, Gordie, Teddy, Vern and Chris, set out in search of the body of a young boy who had been missing. They had overheard where the body might have been located and went to see if they could find it. The boys endured several different obstacles whether it was a train, sleeping in dark wilderness filled with vicious animals, or older boys who were also intent on finding the body, but they continued on until they found the body. Throughout the movie there were several sociological concepts such as, growing up/coming of age, the idea the people will go to great length to achieve fame, and the idea that people perceive people that may be different then how they actually are. The movie uses all three of the sociological perspectives, but the one that stood out to me most what the symbolic interactionist perspective.

The main concepts of sociology is to study human society and social behavior which are viewed in this film at different situations in different outlooks. This paper will analyze the following sociological themes (culture, socialization, social groups, social institution, and social interaction) based on what was portrayed in the film. This film uses micro- and macrosociology examine schools, malls, and explore the "next big thing" that will catch the attention of their target on determining how society works from a range of topics at different levels of analysis.
Symbolic Interactionism and Racism One of the biggest social problems that exists in the world today is racism. One way that racism can be explained is through the symbolic interactionism perspective. Symbolic interactionism is the study of how people base their meaning of social life through interacting with other people such as family, friends, or even strangers. Society and agency play roles in symbolic interactionism. Society is the network of interactions between people and agency is our ability to respond and think independently from restrictions that were placed upon us by society.
I didn’t think that symbolic interaction applied here because it is more of a micro analysis, and structural-functionalism is about how aspects of society are functional and work in harmony, which also does not apply to this topic. This approach is about analyzing the inequalities of aspects in the social world such as race, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation etc., and the issues that stem from them. I believe that in the realm of racial inequality, this perspective ties in with it the most due to the nature of “conflict” that is deeply embedded in its foundation. Racial inequality is an example of social conflict because of the divide that is caused between various races. In this case specifically, the divide between white America and the rest of the minority groups comprising America.
Two of the three theories supports my opinion on abortion. One of the two theories is the symbolic theory. The symbolic theory is a theory that focuses on the interaction between individuals, the individual’s perception of situations, and the ways in which social life is constructed through interaction. This theory supports my opinion on abortion because, it focuses on the individual’s perception of situations. My perception on abortion is that it is wrong and should not be allowed.
As mentioned, structural functionalism is how members in a team are given specific roles and tasks to perform in order to work well as a team; Social conflict on the other hand is how team members will disagree at some points or on certain decisions which might include electing a new captain for the team. In relation to sports and to both theories mentioned, Symbolic Interactionist could be manifested through the symbol of what a captain represents and how it affects a team. A captain is generally there to lead the team, encourage, organize and remind them of their respective roles within the team. The role of a captain directly affects how the team will function and perform through interaction such as their communication skills and their ability to lead a team. Another is how the members of the team give meaning to and identify the authority of a captain and how they respond to it.
