For my independent book assignment I read An Uninterrupted View of the Sky by Melanie Crowder. This book takes place takes place in Cochabamba, Bolivia of 1999 where Francisco and his family originally lived. Due to unfair circumstances, the family was forced to moved into San Sebastián Prison where they spent their days until Francisco, Pilar, and Soledad eventually slip off to move to Altiplano where Francisco's grandparents live. The characters of this book portray many character traits throughout this book. Francisco, the main character, is very responsible and reliable when he is constantly taking care of his family. Intelligence is another characteristic he possesses by going to school and being hopeful he will have a better life someday. Francisco is also very thoughtful. There is not a time in the book where he is not concerned about his Papá, his sister Pilar, or one of his best friends named Soledad. Pilar is his younger sister that is also very thoughtful but shy. The main theme of was the book was how people who are close to you will always be there for each other. Throughout the book, no matter what Francisco was always there for Pilar, Papá, and Soledad, vise versa. The main idea of the book was that some people’s lives are harder than others. For example, the kid’s are punished because they had to live with their father in prison, from a crime that did not even occur. Even though it was not even their faults, they had to pay the consequences. A moral that can be taken out of this book is to not stereotype. The race of a person should not determine if you are guilty or innocent of something. This occurs when Papá was wrongfully accused of drug dealing because he was a darker colored man among the others around
