I do like his main analogy because it made me look at the situation in a different light. If I saw a child drowning in a pond, I wouldn 't think twice about jumping in to help him/her. So why is it I don 't feel the same way about "jumping in" to help children from poverty? In the analogy of the drowning child, Singer questions whether he should jump in and ruin his new shoes, dirty his suit, and be late for work, all to save a child 's life. I surmise part of the reason he adds this to his analogy is to make us question ourselves. Yes, I would be a few hours late to work and ruin a new pair of shoes if I could save a child 's life, so why is it I don 't feel compelled to go without a new pair of shoes or donate a few hours of earnings
