One of the main parts of this movie is that both Thomas and Victor lose their father in some way. Victor's father leaves the reservation and moves to Arizona. While Thomas's father dies in the accidental house fire during a house party. Thomas, because his father died when he was very young, treats it as if Victor's dad is his own. Thomas also tells all of these amazing stories about Victor's dad and the good things that they have done.
With time, Tom finds the means through which to cope with his afflictions. It is important to note that Tom suffers a momentary setback when making a present for Daniel however it does not deter him from his goals like it used to. He acknowledges that “once, probably not that long ago, I’m not sure I could’ve [come] back at all” demonstrating his heightened self-awareness. His voice parallels his transition; initially nervous to face his adversities his voice is shaky and nervous, however his eventual emotional maturation allows him to face his future with hope and confidence. Through his heightened self-awareness, he was able to see past his own suffering and contributes significantly in helping others overcome their adversities.
He leaves work and takes his son along to attend the funeral, except when he returns to work he notices the frequent elderly customer once again in the lobby of the mechanic shop. The shop manager often takes advantage of a mentally-ill, elderly woman who constantly insists there is an issue with her car, where the mechanics simply take the tires down, make some noise, and pocket the extra money. Given how Tommy is contemplating his character in light of his step father’s death, Tommy feels as if he must put a stop to this greedy, corrupt behavior at once. When confronting his boss about the fraudulent behavior taking place in the mechanic shop, he is setting the example for others that it’s not too late to change and do the right thing in life. Little to his knowledge, his son is following him and seeing how Tommy confronts his boss.
Right away, he struggles between choosing to go with his wife or to work on his project. The fact that he chooses to stay home proves the need to succeed is stronger than his relationship with his wife. Not only will he spend hours on end for his job, but when a paper flies out the window, he is unable to stop thinking about the amount of work he would be losing if he let it go. With this said, Tom is suddenly fighting the battle to stay balanced, “he hung suspended between balance and falling ” ( ). If he had not been overly obsessed with his work and this paper, he would have been either with his wife at the movies or inside safe, not wondering whether or not he would survive.
However, as the story progresses, he begins to question the world around him and ultimately becomes a rebel against his oppressive society. At the beginning of the novel,
Tom’s wife goes behind her husband’s back and makes a deal with Old Scratch because she wants all the fortune for herself. The audience realizes soon after that the deal costs her, her life. After this, Tom goes to look for his wife, but instead, searches for all his fortunes that his wife has taken with her. Tom soon makes a deal with the Devil and opens a business within the next few days. These actions show how neither Tom nor his wife really care for each other.
