The viewer’s eyes are drawn to the center of the painting where white train workers dressed in colorful clothes are displaying their papers and pocket watches. They stand in close proximity to powerful iron girders, tanks, and a train engine which show the chugging along of the American economy. Ribbons of oil tankers crisscross the background, portraying an economy that has no means of slowing down. Walking by the workers is an African American soldier carrying a rifle. Unacknowledged by the workers, the soldier passes by.
Tanner’s epitaph describes the hardship of the working class. Corporations that had exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service, otherwise known as monopolies, had completely taken over the market within America. This in turn caused a lack of competition, which only allowed the monopolies to grow bigger. John D. Rockefeller is a prime example of this. For decades rural Americans were aware of the vast petroleum deposits oozing up across the countryside, but it was not until 1859 that an effective means of extraction came along with inception of drilling.
This image represents how the Germans were always creeping up in the water and attacking U.S. supply ships. The portrait also tells the people viewing it to buy liberty bonds to help support the war. Document 12, “Rivets Are Bayonets,” 1918, shows an average man loading a rivet with the war scene behind him. The background shows the American flag in a yellow sky which represents the constant gunfire that shows in the sky. Also, the shadow of the man is showing the men what they should be doing.
The crown gives him respect and authority; however, the crown having a bird on it signifies the illusion that he is a liminal figure or a diviner. In the journal article “The Sign of the Divine King: An Essay on Yoruba Bead-Embroidered Crowns with Veil and Bird Decorations” written by Robert Farris Thompson, he mentions that “we have seen there are probably active power concealed in the crown with fringes and it might be added that on ceremonial occasions skulls are mounted on staffs to deflect evil from the King of Benin” and adding a bird emphasized the Oba with witchcraft. The crown gives the Oba magical powers that he would typically not have, and because of this reason, he resembles a God-like figure. He has the power to hurt one if they are disobedient or acting up and can connect with the spirits demanding them to destroy one. Also, depending on the numbers of birds on the crown indicates how strong the Obas power is (Thompson 77).
The King’s shadow is a historical fiction that takes place during King Harold’s reign and specifically focuses on a young peasant named Evyn. As you might expect like any young person Evyn has dreams, specifically he wanted to become a storyteller. This is important as storytellers around this time, according to the book at least, often used their voices tell these tales rather than letting an individual read them. However, as you might expect from a story set during the medieval period Evyn’s dream will be stolen before he was even given a chance to even try. This was done by a group of thugs who not only cut off Evyn’s tongue, causing him to lose his voice, but also took it one step further and killed Evyn’s father.
Solomon claims "...we can conclude that America is a nation of fantasizers, often preferring the sign to the substance and easily enthralled by a veritable Fantasy Island of commercial illusions"(406). Significantly suggesting that the sunset and big city that are incorporated in the photograph hoping to entice those that have dreams based on
The picture is labeled, “The Drunkards Progress. From The First Glass To The Grave.” The meaning behind this is the men would abuse alcohol and this would lead them to die because they drank too much. It is showing from how the drinking started with a glass with a friend then it escalated to the climax of the drinking problem. Once you reach the summit, you were a confirmed drunkard.
The whole painting is in black and white which gives it a lugubrious tone. The angle of the portrait allows the audience to see the facial expression of each person in the painting. Both African American males have a sort of grin on their face, which shows that the painting is in favor of them. The communist, KKK member is depicted as a skeleton that is weak and being destroyed. The man that is stopping the communist member from hanging the little boy has a banner on that says CRC, which is a representation of the civil rights congress standing up for the rights of African Americans during that time.

This is meant to demonstrate how farmers were taken advantage of in exchange for their produce. The struggle of having mortgages on their land because of the little financial assistance at the time is also depicted in this cartoon. This populist movement sought to overthrow the powerful individuals they saw as the source of their issues. Because of this, as well as their battle with railroad firms, they felt that the nation was against

Saint Augustine learns that everyone and everything is part of God’s creation (2,2). Augustine is now about 29 years old and he is still living in Carthage, but while he is living in Carthage he comes across a man named Faustus. Faustus happens t be a very respected sage of the Manichees (6,10). Augustine seemed to be questioning the long-winded myths of the Manichees because he was comparing his early readings of philosophy to their beliefs (3,3). Augustine had many debates with Faustus but to me it seemed as if Augustine couldn’t really get a word in or really question anything about what Faustus was saying (6,11).
