Part 1: Plot Summary “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor is a story about a family who is planning to take a trip to Florida. The grandmother in the story does not want to take this trip and would rather go to east Tennessee where she grew up. Bailey, who is the grandmother’s son, and the grandmother have a discussion how taking the trip would not be safe due to an escaped Misfit. This conversation foreshadows a later event that occurs in the story.
The next morning the family loads the car to go on the trip and the grandmother is the first family member ready. O’Connor uses very vivid details to describe what the old lady and the mother were wearing. This description could possibly foreshadow the importance of the women later in the story. There are three men and the Grandmother recognizes one of them but can not place him. The men begin to walk towards the family and the reader quickly learns they are holding guns. The children do not understand the danger of the guns and begin to ask why the man has it. This situation portrays the theme of generational contrast due to the childhood innocence. The man admits that he is the Misfit after the grandmother identifies him. The grandmother begins to cry and the reader gets a hint of the Misfit’s distorted respect and courtesy of women. The old lady tries convince the Misfit that he is a good man, alluding to the title of the story once again. The Misfit makes a statement about how children make him nervous.
