Taking a risk means to position yourself in a role or moment of uncertainty. Depending on your circumstances, taking a risk either leads to failure or prosperity. In general, risks have a positive effect and introduce bigger and better things in our life. No matter the outcome, risk taking eases you into being a more resilient individual and builds capabilities to improve chances of future victories. In the text, “A Kenyan Teen’s Discovery” by Richard Turere, the main conflict is the collision between lions and humans. Kenya's cows were being attacked and killed by lions. The risk was taken because the butterfly yearned for the sensation of flight. In addition, a butterfly's life cycle includes the breaking of a chrysalis. The transformation has to take place eventually. The author supports this with, “When my soul broke free, a part of me thrilled at the lift of its arc.” The butterfly never would’ve experienced the thrilling sensation of flights if they’d never leaped from the soft cocoon. The new world opened its eyes to the wonders and possibilities that await. The text states, “I’m thrown left and right and back and forth, longing for the freedom of flight and yet.” Although the new world may seem slightly harsh, the butterfly thrives in its ever-changing conditions. After being released from the comfortable home, the butterfly took great pleasure in the thrill of freedom. However, they longed for the cocoon’s safety and security once again. Thomas took the risk because he was an passionate animal activist and cared profoundly for the prosperity of all animals. The text states, “The fisherman then started sharpening his very large knife, readying himself to gut the shark right then and there. The shark flapped and shook, grasping to hold onto life.” The shark was clearly being abused and struggling in the grasp of the fisherman. It’s sole chance for freedom and survival laid in Thomas’s hands. The author states, “ It showed me the horrors they faced due to finning. They were being killed in huge quantities for their fins and were becoming extremely close to extinction.” The pier incident made Thomas aware of the shark abuse and inspired him to think of ways to stop it. After learning how important a role the shark played in the aquatic ecology, the fisherman reluctantly let go of the animal. The risk was worth taking because the shark would have been slaughtered for dinner. .In the normal course of things, Thomas would never have realized his duty to defend shark rights.
