In this essay I will attempt to discuss the concepts surrounding stigma and also discuss the campaign ‘’Time to Talk’’.
Time to Talk is a national campaign launched in 2014 by HRH Prince Harris at a visit to the London Ambulance Services where he was holding his own Time to Talk day event for the staff and the outcome was devastating by knowing the detrimental impact in society by prejudice, fear and ignorance. According to the mental health statistics, the most common mental health problems are mixed anxiety and depression in Britain, with 7.8% of people in England experiencing depression (such as feeling no joy and no happiness any more) at some point in their lives. Appetite and sleeping patterns can change very significantly, poor concentration, loss of interest in everyday things and becoming isolative are all indicative of depression. In that very moment if people suffering don’t seek help or don’t speak out there is a very significant risk of deterioration. At that one point they may really not value being alive any more, and living becomes a burden. One adult in six had a common mental disorder, yet people are reluctant to talk about it. Thirty-eight per cent of people with mental health problems say they’ve been negatively treated as a result of stigma. For those who experienced discrimination, more than half lost contact with their friends, family and loved ones, nearly one in five lost their job, more than one in 10 couldn’t go through with an important life event, while more than half stopped socialising because of it. (mentalhealth.org.uk/statistics) People with these dilemmas restrict their way of living, they experience lack of interest and lack of motivation which can to lead to isolation and self-neglect. Talking about your thoughts and feelings can help you deal with times when you feel troubled about something. If you turn a worry over and over in your mind, the worry can grow just like a seed is planted in the head and which can cause a diagnosis of mental ill health. Ruminating on an issue can cause anxiety and distress out of all proportion to the original problem which can quickly become overwhelming and lead to significant illnesses.

This assignment was intended to highlight the positive effects that a project such as “Time to Talk” can have. I had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and understanding of two core concepts: facilitation and learning. This essay has also helped me to enhance my knowledge and understanding of the theory that underpins facilitation and learning. Hopefully I will be able to transfer this knowledge to my role as an associate nurse. Completing this essay allowed me to become more aware of “time to talk” campaign.
