For the Money or for Religion The Plymouth Plantation and Jamestown were two colonies who both established in the “new world” which is now known as the United States of America. These two colonies did have similarities in how they lived, but they also came for different reasons. One colony came for religious reasons and the other came for the business and money.
Italian entrance to World War II with the Axis powers can best be described as a rash decision made by a fascist tyrant: Benito Mussolini. After Mussolini’s dismissal in July of 1943, American occupation of Italy continued in order to push German soldiers out of Italy. Even after Italian liberation in 1945, American occupation continued to aid in the implementation of a sound government and to continue establishment as allies (History). Between American and Italian people during occupation laid a barrier of hierarchy of American society and ignorance of the culture and history of Italy. During World War II, almost every social indicator was impacted in many ways. There were many differences between the war's impact on the Italian society and the American society. As a matter for some background, the Italians were fighting with the Axis Powers and the Americans were fighting with the Allies. The war lasted six years with a large number of casualties and home fronts destroyed. By examining the internment of German and Italian Americans as well as American attitudes towards the two minority groups, specifically through American war posters, this paper will address and expose an issue that has largely been exaggerated and neglected up until the late 20th into the 21st Century. The March on Rome was a significant event that changed the political power in Italy from socialists and liberals to fascists. Led by Benito Mussolini, the Fascist Party wanted to ensure that they were the most important political party in the country. They believed that democracy was weak and, was against equality and individualism. They wanted Italy to be a country that had national unity instead of having divisions among classes. In order to do so, many fascist party leaders wanted to hold an insurrection on October 28, 1922 so that they could put pressure on the government of Italy.
The major aspects affecting women under Mussolini’s reign in fascist Italy were the massive push for pro-natalist movements, Mussolini dreamed of a vast nation of fascist Italian soldiers having children with fascist Italian mothers that then gave birth to squads of fascist Italian children. He attempted this by introducing new laws and policies that limited the education on modern contraceptives, making abortions illegal, and giving incentives to women who could meet a “quota” on children birthed, some “quotas” being as high as seven or more depending on the job that the husband possessed. Although Mussolini’s attempt at growing a nation of massively multiplying Italian fascists failed, the ramifications on Italy as a whole can still be seen today. Women’s role in Mussolini’s Italy was nothing more than baby factories and mothers, he did not want them to aspire to be anything more or be anything more and the laws and policies he established portray this idea very clearly. These policies overflowed into the media and were easily visible, although not at the time, in the films that the culture was producing at the time.
Rising from a period of center-left coalition that had been marked by a constant failure to bring promised reforms to Italian society, the struggles of the 1960s acted as a pressure gauge for many sections of the Italian working class, one which was to reach its climax during the mass strikes of 1968-1970.
