A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide is a book written by Samantha Power. At the time of creating the book, she was a professor in Human Rights Practice at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. They explore genocides in the 20th century and the ethnic cleansing that occurs in wars. Within a year of publishing, the book won the J the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction and the Anthony Lukas Book Prize, in 2003. Chapter 10 discusses Rwanda and the genocide that occurred on April 6th 1994; after the Rwandan president’s, Juvenal Habyariman, jet was shot down.
The book discusses the following genocides: Turkey, Cambodia, Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, Srebrenica, and Kosovo. Power also discusses international laws against genocide and the dedication that activists have for the cause. Lack of understanding can allow a US Department Official to say ‘these people do this from time to time’ at the beginning of the Rwandan genocide. These officials know about mass killings so what possesses them to say such things and ignore is beyond me. It is as though they are living in fear of acting upon something horrible. The US government refused to jam the radio signals in Rwanda to interfere with the broadcasting the names of the Tutsi victims that will lead to a massacre. Their excuse was the time it will take to jam the signals, ‘…and then we would need the political go-ahead. By the time we got all this, weeks would have passed…’ They even prevented countries from sending troops since any issue raising from another nation will intervene with the US and lead to conflict.
