Physicists like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton utilized formulas and theories in order to explain the world around them. Thousands of these theories exist in various stages of completion as scientists attempt to unravel the secrets of our universe. One such theory, aptly named the chaos theory, proposes that seemingly insignificant interactions, like the flapping of a butterfly’s wings, may in turn result in a hurricane on the other side of the planet. Reyna Grande’s novel Across a hundred mountains demonstrates this concept as readers explore the life of Juana, the protagonist in Grande’s novel. Grande’s unique writing style sets a slow yet steady pace that readily increases after the departure of Juana’s father, Miguel. As readers draw towards the the conclusion of the novel they begin to understand that the interactions Juana has with individuals throughout her life have imparted a considerable impact on her destiny. Sebastian Luna is a doctor that works at a clinic that Juana is also employed at. Juana ends up dating Sebastian however she is unable to continue the relationship as she can only focus on finding her father. While Juana and Sebastian were dating, she was invited to an event with Sebastian’s family. At this even Juana sees a picture of Sebastian’s family which makes Juana think, “What wouldn’t she give to have a picture like that of her family?” (Grande 199). Ultimately the visit to Sebastian’s family event caused Juana to break off her relationship with Sebastian in order to reunite with her family. Even after the breakup Juana still kept Sebastian in the back of her mind. At the end of the novel Juana, “Took a breath of the ocean’s scent. The smell reminded her of Sebastian” (Grande 255).
