In the book, “Rereading America,” written by Toni Cade Bambara along with Gary Colombo and Robert Cullen, Bambara focuses on the challenges and desire to teach by contras of what you don’t have and what you can achieve. (Bambara, pg. 253-259) It is without doubt that even though a cookie cutter theory is used in most schools; there will be certain social economical neighborhoods in which a teacher or adult will have to vary the process of communication in order to get his or her point across with dedication and teach the love for learning. Ms. Moore had been a wise educated woman who did not avoid the challenging attitudes of children going up in a disadvantaged economical community.
Ehrenreich discusses poverty in the United States and more specifically the “culture of poverty”. Ehrenreich shows the effect of Michael Harringtons’s book “The Other America” and how it shaped the conservative view of poverty. After Harrington’s book, poverty was seen as personal issue not a social issue. The book gave reasoning for sepperating us from them, poor from rich, or educated from non-educated. Many governing politicians used this book to form there view of poverty and to see it as a problem with the person, not a problem with economics or wealth distribution.
In the reading The Idea of America by Nikole Hannah-Jones is a critical part of the 1619 that was launched by The New York Times Magazine. This article marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Virginia. In the article, Nikole Hannah Jones will explain the contributions of black Americans to the nation, explaining how fundamental and important they are to the country, and how fundamental they are to American democracy. She would also explain the fight for rights and democracy, despite the country’s history of slavery and racial segregation. She would suggest that black Americans have played a critical role in influencing ideas for democracy.
The song “Welcome to America” by Lecrea, conveys the double entendre of America. Lecrea demonstrates how America is a stage prediction that is set up to look picture perfect to the outside world, however, some may argue that America is not what it claims to be. Lecrea portrays three different characters, and their view on America. One character lives in poverty, the second character is a military veteran, and the final character is a foreign man whose dreams of coming to America. Lecrea’s tone is solemn, serious, critical and incredulous, he raises awareness of what America represents when it comes to their own, and people from other countries.
In 1791 Thomas Paine wrote a book about America’s demeanor and several centuries later not much has changed. In almost three hundred years buildings have sprung up where forest once thrived, races have come together despite cultural differences, and political lines have rearranged to create the constantly evolving United States of America. The surface of America will never stop changing but, the principles of the American people will always be the same. We as a people will always be accepting of anyone regardless of race and we will always support the right to choose heedless of class. However riots and protestors have begun in an attempt to stop the police officers from treating Americans with such brutality.
Time and history has shown us over and over again the power of words. Great leaders of societies obtain that magnetic pull with words that enable them to reach masses of people throughout the world. It’s all determined by how the speaker or the writer tries to convey his or her message and what they hope to achieve with their words. The Cuban writer, José Martí evidently establishes his political views through his written piece, “Our America”. Martí’s written work is manifested by his political choice of words and distinct approaches that speak to both his fellow Cubans and the higher nation that is the United Sates throughout his essay.
The war brought conflicts to the national identity in that different types of people believed that it was in the United State’s best interest to stay out of or continue the fight in the Spanish American War. Theodore Roosevelt, the Governor of New York and strong supporter of both militarism and imperialism, explains the importance of the United States acquisition of the Philippines in his speech “The Strenuous Life”. He describes the Filipino people as incapable of providing a secure and democratic government so the intervention of the United States was entirely necessary (Document 5). This idea relates directly to the theme of the poem “The White Man’s Burden” by Rudyard Kipling, which urged the United States to colonize in the Philippines, as it was the duty of the American people to help struggling governments. Theodore supported the Spanish-American War, and even created a private military group known as the “rough riders”, unaffiliated directly with the United states, to personally fight in the war.
The Bernie Sanders campaign’s “America” ad, featuring a homonymous Simon and Garfunkel song, is undoubtedly a positive ad, filled with warmth, hope and enthusiasm. The minute-long advertisement switches focus from the candidate to the voters, or the American people. Using classic American images, a familiar folk-style soundtrack and footage of children and family, “America” appeals to optimism and quaint patriotism, especially those of Iowans who are the primary target of the ad. The ad opens with the shot of a snowy day, with wind turbines in the background. The image brings viewers Iowa to relate whatever else happens in the rest of the ad, since Iowa is one of the “top states for installed wind capacity.”
The “American Dream” is defined as the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American. However, to one impoverished woman, it seemed like exactly that: a dream. The woman warrior was an interesting novel of memoirs that gave her audience a new perspective on feminine values, and while there might have been various themes throughout this book, the main focus revolved around Kingston's femininity and struggles of finding one's own, personal voice. Throughout its five chapters there are numerous references to her everyday emotional and physical struggles of growing up as a chinese woman. Kingston's implementation of literary devices, such characterization, metaphors, and symbolism are used in order to brilliantly set the theme in The Woman Warrior. At the beginning of this novel, Kingston’s first chapter “No Name Woman”the entire family is silenced with secrecy, because of an aunt who had not only disgraced her family, but the entire village, when she became pregnant by someone other than her husband, who has been absent in her life for years.
BRAVE NEW WORLD: GLOBALIZATION AND ITS CONSEQUENCES Abstract Globalization in the twenty-first century has produced an explosion of capitalist opportunities, positive resources available for usage by the global market, and with substantially negative outcomes when used for evil purposes. Since the mid to late nineteen-eighties, globalization has taken the trade market by storm. Individuals and groups alike through the use of their own creativity and ingenuity have created products for positive use for all mankind. Products designed, created, built, and tested in some of the most remote places in the world. Globalization as a process was facilitated by the liberalization of trans border transactions by the dilution sovereignty.
When you ask a non American “What does America mean to you?” , they will more often than not answer with hamburgers, obesity, NFL and Reality TV. That is okay because who doesn 't love hamburgers and football filled Sundays, who doesn 't love watching silly reality TV shows and who doesn 't love a cheat day every once in awhile? Those people are judging a book by its cover and fortunately for me… well my thoughts about America are quite different. When an individual asks me “What does America mean to you?”
I 'm Joanna but most people call me Jo; the "anna" got dropped when I realized I wouldn 't stay in the comfort zone any longer! I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and moved to the USA at five years old, where I adopted the "Coming to America" story. My single independent mother worked her butt off to give all three of her kids the opportunity to do and be whatever they wanted. That meant several weekends cleaning houses, painting with her, and overall just working to build character. Two decades later and I can absolutely confirm that I 'm doing exactly what I 've always dreamed of, so I thank her for the sacrifices every day.
