The 1997 film, As Good as It Gets, depicts the life of the main character, Melvin Udall. Udall is an author who writes novels about love and relationships, something which is sorely lacking in his own life due. Udall as at some time in the past, prior to the film’s beginning, been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The film opens with Udall encountering his neighbor’s dog wandering in the hallway of his apartment building. When the dog begins to urinate in the hall, Udall becomes upset and disgusted and shoves the dog down the garbage chute. When the neighbor who is homosexual, comes looking for the dog Udall verbally berates him, stating he has not seen the dog and tells the neighbor that he hopes he finds him as he loves the dog. Compulsions are actions which are done in an attempt to help decrease the person’s anxiety. They are repetitive behaviors the person feels driven to perform according to rigidly applied rules. Udall demonstrates numerous obsessions and compulsions related to cleanliness. He takes extremely lengthy showers with very hot water, so lengthy that Carol falls asleep while waiting for him to finish. When they finally go to dinner, he is not dressed appropriately and the restaurant offers to let him borrow a jacket and tie. Udall is unable to tolerate even the thought of wearing a potentially dirty jacket and tie. Instead, he gets in the car and drives off, without saying anything to Carol, in order to purchase a new, clean jacket and tie.
