The documentary “Finding the Gold Within” is a real eye opener. Many people like to think that issues like racism is not an issue anymore. This shows us how it is alive and well. It might be shrouded as humor or little comments that sadly some don’t even see as racist. However, it is alive, and the stories of these young men show it well. My feelings on this population is misunderstood by some of my Black friends. While I respect all people including young black men. However, I can’t help but in some ways, pity them. As Imani and his friend pointed out. People, including a teacher pointed out how they don’t act Black because they were smart. They spoke proper English and carried themselves as respectable. They have to face people saying they were “acting white”. And the people saying this to them see it as a compliment. They don’t even realize how insulting that sounds. Black men are feared in this world as criminals and that is not the case. Yes, some Black men commit crimes just like every race. In the past and still today, the media broadcast daily pictures of Black men as dangerously criminal, drug dealers, rapist and killers. Since the days of Nat Turner and continued today the white community fears that Blacks will rise above and take retaliate the treatment of the past. This is my reason for having pity for young Black men. But along with this I also have pride in young black men. I see strong examples of them rising above the racism they face daily. Kwame Scruggs is an amazing role model and his work is changing lives of young Back men in Ohio. He is teaching these young men to think outside the box. The use of myths is ingenious in my opinion. I love how one of the new 6th grades said, “A myth is something that is true on the inside, but false on the outside.” The use of myths creates an opportunity for the young men to reflect on they hidden truth not just in the story but within themselves. They can see themselves for who they are not who they are seen as by the racist world. Dr. Scruggs gives them tools to use to deal with the things they face in life. Alchemy, is doing a great job. The first core group had 26 of the 28 kids go to college. Young men who are the first in their families to accomplish this. And upon more research I found out that as of 2015 Six have graduated with bachelor degrees, eight were on track to graduate by 2016. Three were in graduate school and one in law school.
