Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation depicts Aveline de Grandpre, a female french-african woman, living in colonial times. Our heroine is a part of the Assassin Brotherhood, a group of liberal assassins, and fights Templars, who wish to control free will, in context with the history. As an assassin she helps free slaves and watches out for New Orleans under the guise of an ordinary business .Like all Assassin’s Creed games it is based in history. The emphasis on slave culture allows Liberation to stand out in the running series of games. Aveline’s existence as an assassin rests on the fact that her mother, a slave, married her father, a free french man, making her a free women. Cross-racial marriage was not officially legal until after the Civil War, yet cases were found as early as 1723. (Taylor, 1963) The relationship between Aveline’s parents is possible, however, the plausibility of the freedom’s held by Aveline is not. This is not because of her status of a black slave, but because of the status of a woman. During colonial times women, no matter the status, did not have the freedom to act independently. In the game Assassin’s Creed Unity there are no female roles. Dockterman (2014) states it is because it would cost Ubisoft 8,000 more animations. Liberation is unique in that the story is told through a female protagonist, and while not the best game in the series, it’s unique female perspective makes the game appealing.
