In the year 2022, journalist Michelle Goldberg published “Boys and Men Are In Crisis Because Society Is”. Goldberg’s purpose is to explain to the general audience the current state of mental health, as well as multiple other negative statistics surrounding men and young boys, and explain why they are like this. Goldberg tries to achieve this by referring to multiple other studies as well as a novel going into detail about this same topic. However, this article has no real original claims and spends the entirety of its duration quoting and explaining other studies and novels discussing this same topic. In her words, “Like many parents, I’ve seen how school is harder for my son than my daughter.” But this statement is completely out of left field, and is never elaborated on. She also states, “Men’s rates of workforce participation have fallen and their suicide rates have risen. It’s possible to believe that sexism remains a major impediment to women’s flourishing and also believe that for many boys and men life is much harder than it should be”. However, Goldberg doesn’t elaborate on any of these points or multiple of the other points she brings up later in the article as if the author believes the readers already have a grasp on these concepts and ideas.
