Colton Bonner Mrs. Groff ELA 8, Pd. 6/7 7 March 2023 Analysis of “Casey at Bat” “Casey at Bat”, by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, is a poem about a baseball game that is nearing completion and they need their best player to get a hit to win the game. Thayer uses imagery, similes, and word choice to help express the hopes of the crowd in Mudville. First, Ernest used imagery to describe the scene at the game. He states, “So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat…” (Thayer 17). This helps show how the crowd is grim and disappointed. Next, he says, “And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred, there was Jimmy was safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.” (Thayer 24). He says, “A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.”(Thayer 7). This shows that the people in the stands were deathly quiet because of how nervous they were about losing the game. He also says, “From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar, like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.”(Thayer 51). This represents how loud the crowd is after a bad call. Storm Waves are tsunami-like and when they crash onto the coast, they sound like thunder.
