What Does “Crazy” Actually Mean?

Christopher McCandless was a crazy young man. Although being book smart and getting good grades throughout high school and college, he didn’t know a thing about the wilderness. Or maybe he did but he just didn’t care. Nobody will ever know the true reason why he went into the wildness unprepared, knowing what he was getting into. I one hundred percent believe that McCandless was crazy, he denied any type of help anybody tried to give him. He has resources that could have helped him survive and get out of there alive and didn’t take them, he didn’t want to be around anyone or anything, he didn’t want to see a single trace of civilization, he wants to be completely alone...what kind of person would want …show more content…

He up with multiple people that tried to help Chris one way or the other, one off the people the Jon met was Jim Gallien picked up Christ when he was trying to hitchhike too get to where he wanted to go, gallien offered Chris many things, but Chris wouldn’t take them. It was known that Christ went into the wild with, “insufficient provisions, and lacked certain pieces of equipment deemed essential”, he was unprepared and when Gallien offered him to buy some equipment he should have bought before coming out here, he simply said, “No thanks...I’ll be fine with what I’ve got”, he denied equipment that is essential for surviving in that type of wilderness for so long. Like Callarman said, Chris was smart, but he was also ignorant. He was smart enough to know that he could have used other type of equipment that could have helped him, but because he was so sure he would get through anything that came his way, he didn’t take it. If I were going into the forest for even just one day I would definitely bring more than just rice, Christ didn’t. All the food that Christ brought with him into the wild was rice. Gallien says that, “he wasn't carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip”, even Gallien says that anyone would expect him to be carrying way more than he …show more content…

Christ had a map, the map he had was known as a topographic map, which tells you all the little details or where you can find things. If christ would have kept that map with him, and not got rid of it he would have most likely survived. (174) The map would have told him how to cross the river the day he decided to return to civilization, he would have gone out of there, and possibly explain his reason for doing what he did, but because he was so arrogant and wanted to prove he can do it on his own, he died. Chris was not in the right mindset to go into the wilderness like that, he was angry with him parents, he wasn’t thinking straight and once he stepped in that trail without anyone companionship, or help from anyone, he was already dead. He was stupid for thinking he could get through it alone, I mean maybe some people can with training and hard work, but Christ did this without thinking, the only real help he got was from reading books and taking advice from different authors, and fictional characters, but even with that “help” he still didn’t make it
