In this novel Dave Pelzer is the child that is being severely abused by his mother. He writes an incredible story of survival. Through his trials and tribulations growing up in a household that consisted of nothing but abuse and disappointment. He has shown the world how abuse can truly go unnoticed. In this story he shows how mind over matter can allow you to continue on under the direst conditions and with perseverance and what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. You can change your own destiny and only the strong survive.

She slips into alcoholism and then begins abusing Dave. Pelzer gives us a visual of some of the abuse by telling us, “Mother then ordered me to climb on the stove and lie on the flames so she could watch me burn” (Pelzer, 41). With the characterization it appears that depression may have also been a factor in the abuse and drinking. She is very over bearing and will not allow anyone to over step her. He comes into the picture at the peak of Dave’s abuse. Dave refers to him as a “Nazi” because he becomes “Mother’s little Nazi, watching my every move, making sure I didn’t steal any food” (Novelguide.com, 1995). He likes watching Dave be punished and even tells his mother lies in order to make Dave suffer. Bringing forth the fact that Russell is sadistic shows that this characterizations purpose is to enjoy watching Dave suffer. Being as it may, Russell could have underlying conditions such as fetal alcohol syndrome and the abuse suffered by this character seems to be mental due to his mother teaching him that it’s okay to abuse Dave.
Stan Pelzer is Dave’s brother. He is born a year later after Dave. He is also taught by his mother to hate Dave. His abuse seems to be mental in the stance that it’s okay to torment another human being. He is taught by his mother watching an inflicting abuse on Dave is okay. When Dave is nine Stan and his brother Ron abused Dave. “They took turns hitting me and appeared to enjoy throwing their weight around” (Novelguide.com, 1995).
