The war novel “All quiet on the Western Front”, written by the author Erich Maria Remarque, describes the history about the irretrievable damages done to the soldiers that fought World War 1. The story is told trough a narrative way, by Paul Bäumer a soldier himself, accompanied with his group from the same class that volunteered for the war. The novel demonstrates the somber truth of living on the battlefield. The book reveals how the individuals that have to live and fight this war and have the chance to survive are affected and destroyed throughout the rest of their days. Paul Bäumer, the twenty years old and german narrator soldier that loses his innocence in World War 1. Theses young innocent men that are sent to the battlefield without any experience are on their own. They have to learn to support this horrible violence, in order to survive. Paul can be described in a lot of different forms as a mirror image to his friends. As Paul takes a look back in his life he states : “ I imagined leave would be different from this. Indeed, it was different a year ago. It is I of course that have changed in the interval. There lies a gulf between that time and to-day. At that time I still knew nothing about the war, we had only been in quiet sectors. But now I see that I have been crushed without knowing it. I find I do not belong here any more, it is a foreign world.“ (Remarque, p.168). During the whole novel, we see the contrast between Paul’s personality and how the war changes his feelings and behaviors. The novel is described with a feeling of despairation by the soldier who once had different memories than before the beginning of this war. Before the war Paul used to write poems and love to be with his family, he had feelings and was an emotional person. Due to the conditions during this war Paul and his comrades gain the capacity to detach all the feelings separated from his mind, in order to not loose their common sense and do the necessary to survive. Thus later on, Paul becomes incapable to deal with the death of his comrades. In addition, he is unable to have the same sensations and feeling with his family back home. He cannot express himself about the experiences and through what he went during war. On top of that Paul says that he does not see a peacfully futur and that he has memory troubles, to remember everything in the last years.
