In the short story “A Mystery of Heroism,” our main protagonist is Fred Collins a Civil War soldier who is one of the lower ranks in his company. In the short story, the reader has to decide whether or not Collins is a hero or not. From we can interpret Collins isn’t the brightest soldier and he a very egotistical and will try to do anything to prove himself but he also a brave and a little sharp at some points of the story. We also will discuss how if his actions are justifiable and if he grew throughout the story. The way Collins isn’t an intellectual is how in the story the reader learns that they are in the middle of a battle and because he has a quenching for water he is willing to walk out across the battlefield and into enemy lines
