Chapter 2 speaks of a man with the name of Philipeau. Philipeau is writing letters to a lady by the name of Madame de Mauger. Philipeau is a slave on Madame de Mauger's plantation in Saint Dominque, Haiti. Seeing how Philipeau is not a typical slave on the plantation, he has a higher rank than the other slaves he is privileged enough to be the slave driver, which is a spot of higher power on the plantation, but never the less he is in fact still a slave so he doesn’t just get to do whatever he wants to do.
