Since alcohol was a big problem for some men , some of them tried to stop drinking. It was hard for some men to quit drinking. Since it was hard men kept journals of their experiences. The things they felt, saw and just anything about their day. One journal was and it called the Man Walked Into a Bar by Richard Schmitt.the journal is about a man’s life and he quit drinking. Women use to talk about how their husbands coming home being an being aggressive, or just look like they were in a fog. An example of this is in the Journal of Man Walked Into a Bar, by him saying “But mornings after in all their cloudy configurations are part of drinking. Such as he says “A drinking life is wonderful, wild, destructive, and lonely”(pg. 145). Women started to see what drinking was doing to their husbands so they wanted this to stop. This gives a good example on what drinking did to families and people. After men stopped drinking some started to participate in the temperance movement. Some of these men were sports player. Another good example is Billy Sunday who was a professional basketball player. In the Encyclopedia article “Targeting saloons” states “One day in 1887, after getting drunk with some teammates in Chicago, Sunday experienced a dramatic religious conversion. He was overcome with emotion after hearing a group of people singing gospel hymns on a street corner. Sunday abruptly decided to quit drinking and to live a religious life.” This shows that men did change and some people connected with the religious part of the movement. Men were not the only ones who suffered from alcohol. Women were in abusive relationships and people loss babies. Men lose their lives to alcohol.
