In “Cooling Down Our Brain,” Jason Peters talked about how researchers proved that self-control can be developed by specific mental exercises. He explained an experiment named “the marshmallow test” and how the result of the experiment showed that children who had self-control became more successful in their lives than those who did not have it. The author further stated that additional research showed that the human brain has “hot” and “cool” areas and everyone can train the “cool” part to control the impulses.
In his essay, “Should Everybody Write?”, Dennis Baron focuses on the expansion of information due to the advancement of technology and the vast amount of unchecked writing available on the internet. Baron also goes into depth about the origins of writing and the impact it has had on readers, authors, and researchers. After he presents the origins and progression of writing, Baron answers the question of, should everybody write? In early era’s, according to Baron, “… in the 17th century England, a period known for the flowering of English letters, where even kings and queens composed poetry and the brand-new Royal Society promoted science writing, literacy in London remained a mere 10% for men, a shocking 1% for women” (845).

Advertisers make attempts to strengthen the implied and unequivocal messages in trying to manipulate consumers’ decisions. Jib Fowles wrote an article called “Advertising’s Fifteen Basic Appeals,” explaining where he got his ideas about the appeals, from studying interviews by Henry A. Murray. Fowles gives details and examples on how each appeal is used and how advertisements can “form people’s deep-lying desires, and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for” (552). In Clive Thompson’s essay, “Smarter Than You Think”, he argues that computers and search engines such as Google actually improve our memory and therefore our ability to analyze information. Thompson bases his theory on the concept of Transactive memory, a social system in which information is shared collectively in a group, with different people assigned key pieces of that information to remember. In Thompson’s opinion, the internet has become that “collective memory” for the people that use it, storing and dispensing knowledge and details more efficiently and accurately than any human could. Crenshaw (1989, 1993) argued that race and gender are not mutually exclusive social identities that a Black woman experiences, the intersection of race and sexuality go accordantly with each other. Similarly, hooks argued that they are equally congruent values to the lives of those affected by such identities (2000). Crenshaw (1989) criticized the feminist movement for its failure to consider and promote the voices of women in the margins; the women who occupy more than one oppressed space and hold more than one oppressed status because of their race, sexuality, class, as well as gender. Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate, Elie Wiesel delivered an impassioned speech in which he spoke of the perils of indifference in front of United States and World leaders. During his speech, which as known as the “Perils of Indifference.” Wiesel uses a three pronged approach of pathos, logos, and ethos to demonstrate the dangers standing by and doing nothing. Speaking as a witness, survivor, and teacher, Wiesel successfully argues for the case of action in Kosovo by first making witnesses of the audience, then by questioning the audience’s ethics, and finally showing that the world has learned from the atrocities of the past. First Wiesel uses pathos by telling his story of liberation in a third person narrative, drawing his audience in.
What this essay is saying about students and education is there is no student who doesn’t want to learn or what’s to get an education. Everybody is capable of learning, but the problem is sometimes the education are given by people who don’t care if you are learning or not. In this essay, we learned that the author was put in classes where the teachers didn’t care too much about their students and because of this he become a mediocre student. Not because he didn’t like school or he was lazy, but because there was no inspiration in learning. Luckily, Mike Rose the author of I Just Wanna Be Average found someone that wants him to start learning someone that make him change his mind.
In “Brains vs. Brawn”, by Mark Cotharn, Cotharn talks about his experience on both sides of discrimination. At his first school he had a high status because of his talents playing quarterback on his high School football team. It was at this school he got the “good side” of discrimination. He talked about how the football coach came to talk to Cotharn about joining the football team. Even the Principal met with him and told him he will to well at the school.
The human mind is one of the greatest enigmas that exists on our planet, we are constantly amazed by what it is capable of, whether is be for better or for worse. Creativity has always been seen by our society as a positive personal attribute and it is encouraged that everyone experiments with the potential of their minds to see what they are capable of and what the enjoy. While it is important to test the potential of our minds and our creativity, it can become detrimental to ourselves in some ways if not managed properly. The fact that happiness is a state of well-being pursued by humans since the beginning of humanity is not new. Since the ancient Greek philosophers, happiness has always been a goal for people. However, the definition of happiness is still subjective and controversial as Mark Kingwell, an award-winning social critic, essayist, and professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto, presents in his article “In pursuit of Happiness." The author begins to build his credibility by calling everyday facts and emotions, also by citing philosophers, researchers, and other authors. Using the sources effectively in a persuasive piece, Kingwell demonstrates, through examples and science researches, the difficulty in defining happiness, which can result in unhappiness.

Everyday we see different types of ad such as display ads, radio commercials, and TV commercials. According to the author 's, so many commercials are mental polluting. There is no place to hide from advertisements are found everywhere such as buses, billboards, stadium, gas station, countryside, etc. I agree with the author point of view.
Advertising is a form of propaganda that plays a huge role in society and is readily apparent to anyone who watches television, listens to the radio, reads newspapers, uses the internet, or looks at a billboard on the streets and buses. The effects of advertising begin the moment a child asks for a new toy seen on TV or a middle aged man decides he needs that new car. It is negatively impacting our society. To begin, the companies which make advertisements know who to aim their ads at and how to emotionally connect their product with a viewer. Attention is a restricted source; therefore, selective attention permits people to not take notice of insignificant details and concentrate on the main material that matters. Theories of selective attention incline to emphasise on when stimulus information is attended to, either early in the procedure or late. Donald Broadbent 's filter model was one of the earliest theories of attention. Broadbent (1958) realised that information from all stimuluses entered a sensory buffer no matter what time.
