White women from the south are often perceived as unsuccessful, uneducated, and unhealthy. Monica Potts would agree with that perception. Monica Potts makes it very evident that she does not disagree with that stereotype in the least bit that is in, “What’s Killing Poor White Women.” This writing is definitely an argument, and she is for upholding the stereotype. Although, white women from the south are often thought of in such a way, it is not true. In Monica Potts’ reading, “What’s Killing Poor White Women, ” she tells the story of Crystal Wilson’s life to strengthen her argument. Crystal was the type of woman who Potts is attempting to prove that all white women in the south start out as or eventually end up like. I also absolutely love to ride horses, shoot, wear camouflage, I live in cowgirl boots, and many other southern activities. There is also a very sophisticated, smart, and classy side to me. In fact, I can wear cowgirl boots with a dress and look just a classy, and no, that look does not “dumb me down.” Having said all of that, this is my proof that white women from the south are not all the same and can be exceptionally intelligent. Also, my mom barely graduated high school and she is still smarter than the average person, and that obviously has not decided my education goals and career goals. This stereotype really irks me because it is an insult to my friends and me. My friends are just as successful, healthy, and educated as me, if not more than myself. This stereotype really just baffles me. I ask myself whenever I hear this I just ask myself, how did this ever come about? Why not white women from the north? Because, I know I can “kick up some mud” and still be intelligent, healthy, and very successful at the same
