Books are a reflection of fantasy’s and tall tales, but they can also align with our modern world. One great example of this is Octavia Butler’s, Parable of the Sower. Butler uses her book as a way to connect with the real world. While Butlers criticism of social inequalities and social odds aren’t relevant to today’s day and age, criticism of poverty and illness, personal relationships, and violent upbringings are relevant to todays society. Whether it’s through dialogue, inner thoughts, or events that take place in the plot, they are applicable to real world situations and ideas. Butler uses a powerful plot with determined and steadfast characters to drive this idea home.

Keith suffered from loneliness and isolation in the book, something that many people struggle with today. For example, “Keith wouldn’t say where he’d been or where’d he’d gotten the new things, so Dad beat him bloody.” (Butler, pg 97) Here, Lauren is explaining how Keiths relationship with his family and dad is heavily influenced on the outside world. When Keith runs off for the first time, his family is devastated and worried, later, his self forced isolation and recklessness gets himself killed and puts everyone else in his community at risk. Today, many people suffer from lack of acceptance, and loneliness, and they feel running away is the best answer to the problem. Baya Voce says, “Loneliness is a public health crisis, but 1 in 5 Americans suffer from loneliness.” - “ It can cause depression, and it can even lead to premature death.” - “Instead of leaning in to our communities, we’ve learned to suffer alone.” (Voce, 2016, 0:29 - 1:10) Here, Voce is explaining how loneliness deeply effects the person involved, and the community around them. Just like with Keith, he suffered from isolation in his own way, and it ended up getting him killed. Instead of looking to his family and community for support, he tried to deal with it alone.
