Rusty Crowder Period 2 Quarter 2 Commentary #1 The Long Walk by Stephen King Pages 1-25 (Chapter 1) The story starts off with the main character, Raymond Davis Garraty. He is a 16-year-old boy from Maine. The only one competing from Maine, where the long walk takes place, and is supported by big crowds of people.

Author Walter Dean Myers did not have a normal childhood like most children tend to have. Walter Dean Myers lost his mothers three years after he was born and his father was to poor to take care of him so he put him in a foster home (Litature and it’s times). As he was adopted and growing up Walter Dean Myers had a speech impediment which made him diffuclt to communicate. As this disablilty made him angry he started to pour out his thoughts in writing.
In conclusion, the cultural contexts, such as the writer’s and the audience’s nationality and backgrounds, have the important meaning to the message of the sentences. Depend on the cultural viewpoints of the writer, the choice of the words and the emphasized points are changed. Also, the audience’s knowledge and thought influence to the way to accept the contents. Geoffrey Sirc wrote “The Autobiography of Malcolm X as a Basic Writing Text” to convey to his students and all students of literature that this book “teaches the importance of passion and strength of character” that these are “essential attributes to growth as a writer.” This journal article reaffirms the reason why all students should be required to read the book and Sirc states that autobiography allows the student to develop a deeper understanding of how to be inquisitive when confronted with stereotypes or ignorance. The affirmation comes in the form of a quote from Malcolm X in the epilogue of the book “People don’t realize how a man’s life can be changed by one book” (X and Haley 400) and the impact that statement would have on future
I completely agree with Lily that this was one of the funniest anecdote that we had read thus far. I think it shows another side of Stephen King because he is a dark horror and sci-fi writer, but reading about his life you see that he is also quite a comedian. In “On Writing” he has been able to make fun of his life and not take himself seriously, and you can sometimes see that he is reflecting on the memories and realizing in the moment of writing what they even meant. The anecdote that really stuck with me is when he talked about having both a drug addiction and being an alcoholic.

Klosterman Both Stephen King and Chuck Klosterman believe that many people watch horror movies for the thrill and excitement, however Klosterman uses horror movies as a metaphor while King uses horror movies as a sense of relief. Horror movies have always been such a popular genre that people watch. The horror genre is one of the top genres to watch other than comedy and romance. Many people may enjoy horror movies, while many others may not enjoy horror movies.

I never recognized any of Stephen King’s work, so I had no idea what to do expect about his book On Writing - A Memoir of the Craft. When reading the book, I thought the pace was too slow, especially at the start. However, I did found it interesting to see how he connected his life story or events into his book. After reading the book, I’ve learned many tips, and gain new perspective about writing. When reading, one thing that really struck me was how King was able to make his stories.

King effectively uses these devices to convey his theme of persevering through adversity to become a greater writer and person. Reading and Writing are Important Stephen King's "Reading to Write" (72) give details about King's methods on becoming a better writer. To become a better writer, you must read a whole heap of books. There are so many other things you can read other than books like magazines, newspapers, labels on food, and papers. As a student in college, I understand Stephen King's methods. Reading and Writing will help me further my college education, and it will help me get to my goal.
What guides authors to write the books they do has been a subject of great debate for many years. Author Milan Kundera was a believer in what he called the “wisdom of the novel.” In his “Jerusalem Address” and “The Depreciated Legacy of Cervantes” Kundera goes into what he thinks this wisdom actually is. To Kundera the writer does not actually make a novel, they just channel some outside force makes the novel.
Pop art era originated in New York during the mid-1950s and ended in the early 1970s. It focused on familiar places in citizen’s day to day life, creating commercial images and during this time Pop art boomed because of the media World War II was receiving. Roy Lichtenstein’s painting “WHAAM!” would mostly fall under the category of the Pop art era for the reasons being that it is based on an image from a DC comic “All American Man of War” which was published by DC comics in 1962. Lichtenstein presented a powerfully charged scene in an impersonal manner, leaving the viewer to decipher the meaning for themselves. The painting is in a comic style of art (Pop Art) and depicts two fighter jets (one owned by the United States the other owned by the Soviet Union) in the air with one shooting a missile towards the other jet with a humongous “WHAAM!”
